yakumo comes back after his semester at the academy with bags under his eyes that rival quincy’s. he’s also.. noticeably out of it, slow to respond and looking like a timid fawn, flinching at every loud noise.
olivine had been keeping a close eye on yakumo, of course, worried about his declining state but also feeling guilty for getting him and eiden wrapped up in the cult situation in the first place. but due to how busy he was with his own personal affairs, the priest unfortunately wasn’t able to ask yakumo what exactly had been bothering him lately. he chalked it up to rigorous late night studying, yakumo had always been concerned about his grades after all. thinking about it reminded olivine of the good news.
“yakumo passed his exam!” he says, giving the serpent one of his trademark ‘idol smiles’ and squeezing him gently on the shoulders.
“oh? that’s awesome yakumo! i knew you could do it!” eiden smiled as he felt a genuine sensation of pride wash over him. he knew firsthand how much yakumo had struggled with learning to control his magic, but he always knew he’d get the hang of it eventually.
however, whereas yakumo would normally preen and turn bright red under the attention and praise, this time he simply blinked and stared blankly.
“ah?” after feeling lost in a slight daze for a moment, olivine’s hands on his shoulders reminded yakumo of the present conversation. “o-oh! yes.. i passed my exam..!”
“that must be why you’re so tired huh?” eiden smiled sympathetically, leaning up to pat yakumo on the head, a motion that would both get across his pride and comfort the sleepy serpent. yakumo nodded and closed his eyes, bunting against eiden’s hand like a cat, causing the other man to huff out a laugh at his cuteness.
“well, now that you’re back home, you can get plenty of rest, okay? and no helping out in the kitchen while you’re resting! i’ll ask the staff about it!”
yakumo nodded again, thanking eiden for his concern. he was happy that eiden cared so much about him, but at the same time, he hated lying to him.
technically it wasn’t lying, yakumo did pass his exam, but he neglected to mention that the true reason for his lack of sleep was the constant nightmares he was having about almost being sacrificed by the headmaster and the other cultists. the bags under hair eyes weren’t from staying up studying, rather they were caused by his subconscious tormenting him nightly with images of olivine in weak and pain, eiden nearly bleeding out.. and yakumo being helpless to stop any of it.
eiden was already worried enough though. yakumo didn’t need to burden him with the truth. eiden was probably just as tired after what he’d gone through, he needed to rest more than yakumo did.
he could deal with this on his own… couldn’t he?
