OLIVE OATMAN // THE WOMAN WHO INTEGRATED INTO THE MOHAVE

“She was an American woman who was captured and then released by the Yavapai people when she was a teenager. In 1851, while travelling to Arizona, her family was attacked and she and her sister were taken as captives. After a year with the Yavapai, Olive and her sister were traded to the Mohave people. They treated the girls well, even giving Olive a chin tattoo - a sign of integration into the tribe. Sadly, her sister passed away due to famine, but Olive continued to live with the Mohave for several more years. In 1856, she was released at Fort Yuma, Arizona. She became a celebrity after entering back into white society.”
