XIV. Oliver Bach

Shaped evenly by his travels and the works of those preceding him, Oliver has been able to develop a style, simple and timeless with an often vibrant palette of teals and pinks that I love to see in their often surprising contexts. Nomad he is, and forever working he remains; connecting the dots between cultures, linked through one of the oldest practices and its place within the modern world.

Where do you feel most at home, in the world? In nature. Anywhere away from a lot of people and close to water and woods. Do you have a vice? Beer, chocolate and ice cream. Do you live life by any motto? No. How many hours sleep, is enough (for you)? There is never enough sleep, but I would love to learn to wake up early so I can have longer days and be more productive with my time. What is your most used machine? I rotate my machines quite a lot now, but I used a Bert Krak machine all day everyday for at least a year. How important are manners? Very important. It's something I'm learning from being with my girlfriend (I had no manners before). They man a lot to her, always say your P’s and Q’s. I have no social skills which can sometimes come across rude, but i don't mean to, I'm just a nervous person. What do you remember about your first tattoo? Everything. I had just turned 18 and knew I wanted a tattoo so I went to a shop a friend recommended and spent all day looking through their "design books" and hated everything. After a few hours I was asked what I wanted and I just opened the book and picked the first thing I saw. A tiny tribal bird thing, horrible but it was a tattoo. I went upstairs to a stuffy dirty room and the Eastern European guy who couldn't speak English just pointed at the clock then started digging in. My brother and my mates had been talking for ages about getting tattoos but never committed. So I was the first to come back with a "tat" and that kind of started it of. It took me 3-4 more tattoos from that guy to realise he's shit. What do you need the most, right now? I think I have everything I need right now. How do you take your coffee? Any How, but as Soon as I wake up. I'm really sensitive to caffeine so I can't really have any if I'm tattooing because my hand shakes and I get dizzy and clumsy. How close are we to W.W.III? It's a crazy time we're living in right now, there's a lot of shit happening. But for me I try not to let it effect me. Me and my girlfriend have travelled to over 40 country's and we try to not listen to the fear from the media and take everyone as they are. We have met people from every class, religion and background and we're all basically the same and most people are extremely selfless. The media say we're in WWIII but the more people I speak to, your everyday person is just getting on with life. What’s the best/worst thing about Instagram? The obvious things really. It's a great tool to connect with people, I have made a lot of good friends and it allows me to make connections with other tattooers to make guest spots all around the world. That's pretty amazing and I'm really greatful for all the followers/customers that allows me to travel and work and live an exciting life. Worst thing: it gives people a fake sense of respect. I hate seeing great tattooers getting no attention while some edgy fashion tattooers doing crap that 12 year old girls think is great getting undeserving popularity. How do you stay inspired? Travelling. I find inspiration or reference from almost every place I visit. Who or what has shaped your style? I just rip off the old guys basically because they got it right and from my perspective it doesn't need changing. I like the simple designs as they are more powerful. My tattoos aren’t really "traditional" looking but maybe it's because the first good tattoos I saw were on Flickr a long time ago, and I would obsess over the look of these tattoos. I only followed 3 tattooers..Mark Cross, Pedro Soos and Nico Acosta. I didn't understand what it was they were doing but I couldn't get them tattoos out of my head. And most importantly Shen Schubert, I always wanted my tattoos to look like his. He showed me a lot about style as well as everything else. What would you be doing, if you weren’t a tattooer? I think I would be living in India or somewhere doing anything. I have done a lot of terrible jobs and I couldn't and wouldn't go back to that. What’s the last movie you watched? I don't know the name of it but it had stone cold Steve Austin in it. Basically he was hard as nails and he was doing illegal fights to get cash to help a little kid. I fell asleep, I can't tell you how it ended but I reckon he gets the money and the kid survives. Every good cocktail should have________ in it. Beer. What has tattooing taught you? To enjoy everyday life. It's rare for most people to actually enjoy their job so I'm blessed. Of course it had hard days too but mostly it's a good feeling to create something that the customer is happy about.
