Lukas tells Marna about his encounter with the masked killer who calls himself X. Marna tells Lukas it’s not the first time she’s heard about him and believes she knows where to find him. But are they ready to face such a powerful evil?
This really is one of my favourite books to come out of Zenescope because it's so out there and it's now! The concept is stellar and the way that Ralph is telling this really captures the imagination and creativity of the reader beautifully. I don't know about you but I want to try entering this game and giving it a go. I mean create your own skin so you can literally be anyone you choose, life a life of excitement, danger and whatever else you choose within game takes the whole VR experience to a level that is coming and possibly here but who knows.
The story & plot development that we see here is phenomenal as we see the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information. There is a moment within this book where you know someone is going to get it, you just don't know which one. This engages the reader extremely well and makes you think and become more and more involved in the story. The character development is sensational and I like seeing only Lukas out of game, he is the star of the book by default, by that I mean he's the only one we see out game who's lived. His interactions with the others and the information he reveals and such really helps to flesh him out as a young man who is insecure and finding the courage within himself to be the man he wants to be. Of course this doesn't count out the two who saw the Professor, and Mary Ann, because and Marna all get some marvellous face time. The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns it helps create the books ebb & flow while highlighting how it's structured.
I really am into the whole concept and considering I am as far from a gamer as you can get, okay video gamer, that I want to try this is a testament as to how well this whole thing was thought out ahead of time. If this isn't a game world and Ralph created it then he's need to make this a reality because it would make a fortune.
I am a huge fan of the interiors here as well. I love the linework and how we see it's varying weights as they bring about this level and quality of attention to detail. I mean the delicate lines that make up the faces and the facial expressions are just beautifully rendered. Seeing Lukas in the real world has that subtlety to it that highlights why he's so shy and why he looks the way he does in the game and that's superb visual storytelling. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this really good, solid and strong eye for storytelling. I like how backgrounds are utilised here and how they work in the composition inside the panels to showcase the depth perception, scale and how it brings this overall size and scope to the book. The colour work is literally gorgeous here as well. I love how the various hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work. The colour block technique is utilised perfectly and how light sources are so consistent is great.
For pure imagination and creativity this ranks up there and when you add in the writing, story development, characterisation and factor in these gorgeous interiors you aren't going to get much better than this of that I am sure.
