Richard wasn’t the only man going off to war. Robert had also been drafted, as well as Jonathan Landgraab, the heir to the Landgraab fortune. Each man brought his own group of loved ones, who all hoped they would return home safely once the war was over.

Oliver came over for a visit one day, though Robert sequestered him in the bedroom he and Virginia shared and locked the door, so the family didn’t get to meet him.
The boys were... close. Close in a way that most of Windenburg’s citizens wouldn’t understand.

At the bluffs, Robert “just so happened” to run into Oliver Purdue. They’d met a few months prior, and since they couldn’t go to school together, they spent their free time together instead.
