“Mister West, I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to see you sooner.” Jared was customarily busy –– that was his life –– but this was one of the very few times he had neglected a new resident for quite so long. He had seen Oliver West arrive, though he didn’t think they had said anything of any real substance at that time. …It was to be expected. New residents were often angry, overwhelmed, or injured. Or some combination thereof. It wasn’t typically a time for much conversation, which was why, when it was Jared’s turn to do orientation, he allowed the resident some measure of time before inundating them with Lake Grimstone 101.
“My name is Jared Hawley. I’m one of the resident contacts here at Lake Grimstone, and I’ll be taking charge in your orientation. You’re welcome and encouraged to speak with any or all contacts whenever you need; I’m just here to get you started,” he continued, holding his hand out for a quick handshake. “I understand that you got lost earlier? I apologize for that. I should have gotten you your packet earlier. I wish I could have an amazing reason, but the day just got past me a bit.” In his experience, some moments of candor tended to build his trustworthiness, and that was what Jared wanted: for Oliver West to at least afford him the smallest amount of trust that Jared would be doing what was best for him while he was at Lake Grimstone. Some residents believed him. –– Some residents did not.
“Do you have a moment now? I was hoping to run over a few things with you.”
