international sports will always be a political, they will always be a venue for nationalism, and hence, they will always be a place where conservative sentiments are emboldened. that is never going to change.

however, not everything is immutable. awareness and acknowledgement are just a means of self justification if you do not work towards a the possibility of a better future. there is value to financial pressure and public outcry (which is, inadvertently, a form of financial pressure) because this is the one language the league speaks. i do not think this will do anything at all to change the politics of the majority of male hockey players, but it may force them to behave a little better in public, which is something. plenty of people DO take what those men say at face value, including numerous young children who look up to them, and so even if their core values do not change, i do think there is something to be said for not laughing along to casual misogyny.
