How to Chant 'Om'
"Om" or "Aum" is the universal sound that vibrates in the universe. Chanting this sound helps to bring peace and calm to the body, mind and soul by merging the vibrations of the body with that of the universe.
Find a calm place to sit in a comfortable position. A good position would be to sit on the ground cross legged with back straight at all times.
Wear loose comfortable cotton clothes that are not tight at any part of the body. All the channels of the body need to be free and comfortable.
Adjacent to your navel, place your right palm (facing up) in your left palm.
Close your eyes and for a few minutes relax your mind and body.
Slowly realize the vibrations taking place in each part of your body.
As the awareness of the vibrations becomes more aligned, slowly take a long breath in. Initially try to count to 5 in your mind. Try to increase this number.
Hold the breath for 1 second and then exhale slowly. Initially try to count to 7 while exhaling.
Do the above two steps 3 times.
While exhaling for the 3rd time, chant "aaaaaaaa....". Feel the vibrations in your abdomen (and under the chest).
After you have fully exhaled, relax for 2 seconds.
Inhale again (slow and long breath). While exhaling this time, chant "oooooo..." Feel the vibrations in your chest and neck.
After you have fully exhaled, relax for 2 seconds.
Inhale again (slow and long breath). While exhaling this time, chant "mmmmmmm...". Feel the vibrations in your head and neck. At first this may cause dizziness. Keep a glass of water next to you. If you feel any dizziness, open your eyes slowly and drink some water. Stop for the day.
After you have fully exhaled, relax for 2 seconds.
Now Inhale again and, while exhaling, say "Aaaaauuuuummm..." or "Oooooomm." About 80% of exhaling time should be for "Aaaauuuu" and 20% should be for "mmm".
Do the above step 3 times (you can increase it to 9 times).
After Om meditation is done, relax and concentrate on your normal breathing for 5 minutes.
