Week Thirty-One
During the International break I followed Canada’s Men’s National Team closely, as I always do, with hopes that one day they might just succeed at reaching the next level in qualifying ultimately leading them to the World Cup. They too played a convincingly good game versus a less substantial opponent in Cuba’s national squad, even more so when they only showed up with eleven players…and no subs. It was for the most their starting eleven, so it wasn’t a completely lackluster squad, they just couldn’t afford to take anyone off the pitch. The match ended 3-0 Canada, and should have been more…a statement that seemed to be the talk of all those in the soccer community. They just couldn’t find the back of the net on many of their chances. I could look up the stats, but I’m feeling lazy, so Google it yourself and be blown away at the lopsidedness of Canada’s play. This lack of finish would come back to haunt them, especially their lack of goal scoring prowess in the Honduran game a month or so ago at BMO Field where the match ended in a 0-0 draw that Canada dominated as well.
As Canada headed into Honduras for the final match of the group stage in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014, all they needed was a draw to advance. It looked promising after the 3-0 win versus Cuba and the domination Canada displayed against Honduras earlier, and within the first couple minutes of the match it still did. Canada had two extremely good chances to score and looked up to the challenge, but it was their inability to finish that once again proved to be fatal. Those two shots in the opening minutes were pretty much gimmies, and neither went in, while Honduras responded with a chance of their own that they did not squander. Canada’s defense looked horrendous the entire match, while the offense looked threatening at times, they just could not put the ball in the net. The match became an embarrassment to Canadian fans and soccer players, the total disregard for showing any pride or desire by most, left a foul taste in my mouth, and I’m sure many others. The final score was 8-1 Honduras…and ultimately ended Canada’s hopes of qualifying for Brazil in 2014.
The silver lining of this debacle however, is that it is quite apparent that Canada Soccer needs to restructure the way tings are done. To take a look at other successful countries and emulate, combine and utilize what they have done to help create a consistent and hopefully more successful outcome for the future.
Back in the MLS, The Whitecaps had a similar experience. Not so much with the score-line, but with the lack of desire and edge needed to perform in big games. Coming off the win versus Chivas, and after watching the Caps interviews on the embarrassment Canada was handed, I thought they would have came out swinging. Even more so as it was Cascadia rival and a chance to clinch a playoff spot…and possibly derail Portland from winning the Cascadia Cup.
Well, they didn’t show up, it was a match in which I wish I hadn’t had to sit through. It was super flat, and some of the player’s demeanor was just straight up appalling. Most notably Barry Robson who time and time again has shown his unacceptable style of play. Twice he lost the ball and felt so cheated that he just stood there waving his arms while the play went the other way with decent chances for Portland. He must stop this and just play soccer, he looks ridiculous and it’s extremely frustrating.
He wasn’t the only stain in the squad that day, but I won’t go on a rampage slaughtering each player, just look at the highlights…or lowlights is more like it. http://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/2012/10/match-highlights-0 One positive from the match was the return of Omar Salagado, who came on as a sub in the second half, and looked relatively sharp.
The final score was 1-0 for Portland on a cracker from Jack Jewsbury outside the eighteen-yard box. This left the Caps holding their heads, as were many fans who couldn’t believe the lack of effort in the match, especially with so much on the line. Lucky for the Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders did them a favor beating FC Dallas 3-1 solidifying the first ever MLS playoff spot for the Caps or any Canadian MLS team for that matter.
The blame is definitely partly on the players, the long balls were unnecessary and drove me nuts. I will once again also stress that Martin Rennie really needs to look in the mirror and stop being so patriotic. His Scottish DP”s aren’t or at least have not shown that they are any better than other players on the team that have and did start on the bench. The stats alone are proof enough, as the Caps record in the first half of the season are much better than the stats in the second half, ever since Rennie starting replacing players and messing with the starting eleven. If the fist half of the season wasn’t as strong as it was, the Caps would most definitely wouldn’t be in the playoffs this season.
The final match of the MLS regular season sees the Whitecaps up against Real Salt Lake in Utah on Saturday October 27th, followed by their wildcard one-off match against LA Galaxy five-days later to determine who plays San Jose Earthquakes in a home and away series.
The odds are definitely against the Caps to proceed past LA, but anything is possible and if Rennie plays his best players period, not the ones who showed up in practice, there’s an even a better chance it could happen. Fingers are crossed and the dream is still alive…for now.
It’s weird, I never get nervous,” Darren Mattocks said. “I’m always excited but at the same time I’m always humble and I know I have to put in a good shift for my teammates.

Part of our thought there was Omar worked so hard and was deserving of his chance. You could see a little glimmer of hope of him in the future and that’s exciting for everyone at the club. Camilo, now that he’s back and healthy, we want to give him as many opportunities as possible.
