he asks her about how far she must live and sofia can only awkwardly smile , looking down and avoiding eye contact for a moment in case he catches on to her lies and strange demeanor. then again , she's been odd from the moment she set foot on land. god , the servants and the maids had to teach her how to walk within hours before she met the prince. the people have been kind , but extremely wary of her appearance. it's only ever been spencer who accepted her for exactly who she was.
or , well ... not truly who she was , but for as far as her personality goes. the passing of his father causes a gasp to leave her mouth — giving her all the more reason to never reveal she's a mermaid and daughter of the king of the seven seas. she wishes to think anything different , but he might've been the reason why spencer's father got into a shipwreck in the first place. she holds his hand tightly , eyebrows furrowed and gathering the courage to look him in the eyes again.
'' i'm so sorry , '' she whispers , a sorrowful expression on her face , '' that must've been so difficult , and hard. you were so young. ''
sofia presses closer to him , as if there was any space left to remove between them , and places her head on his shoulder. '' i lost my mother when i was about ten years old. she got really sick all of a sudden , and it happened within the span of just a day. we never discovered what it really was. '' she adored her mother , but not her father or her sisters wanted to ever talk about her. '' so i guess ... i kind of know what it's like. '' she looks up and carries a wistful simper. '' you're not alone , my prince. i will stay with you , if that's something that you want. ''
