FROM UNINCORPORATED TERRITORY [GUMA’]

This soundtrack is for my third book of poems, which received the American Book Award. The songs echo many of the themes of the book, including decolonization, migration, demilitarization, cultural revitalization, and food sovereignty in relation to my experience as native Chamorro from the Pacific Island of Guahan (Guam).

"Inifresi" by Jack Lujan

This song puts to music and voice the Chamorro pledge of allegiance, "Inifresi," a poem by Bernadita Camacho Dungca. The poem is a pledge to protect and defend our culture and environment.

This song, by Chamorro singer, songwriter, and activist Erica Nalani Benton speaks to the longing for home and importance of returning.

"Decolonize" by Matthew Sablan

This powerful song speaks to the urgency of decolonization for the Chamorro people.

"Down for the Movement" featuring Willa, Meta, and daʻkota

This song responds directly to the proposed military buildup on Guam, featuring a few of the island's most talented rappers, as well as many activists who appear in the video.

"All Life is Sacred" by daʻkota alcantara camacho

This song speaks to the sacredness of land, life, and culture for indigenous peoples.

"Guava Jelly" by Bob Marley

I have several food poems that echo the sentiment in this song.

"Guava Jelly" by the Kaʻau Crater Boys

A Hawaiian band version of the Marley song. Guava jelly goes good with Spam jelly, if you know what I mean.
