A Fairytale a Day - Beauty and the Beast
For the next month, our theme is #OnceUponANovember! As we’re reading Marissa Meyer’s Heartless - a take on the life of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, a classic fairytale - I thought we’ll explore more fairytale retellings through my recommendations, to you. First up, my personal favourite, Beauty and the Beast!
Beauty and the Beast is my favourite ever fairytale, my favourite ever Disney movie, and one of my favourite YA trilogies. Belle taught me that it was far more beautiful to be kind and true to yourself than dolling yourself up for Gaston. Belle’s ferocity in knowing what she wants, and knowing what she doesn’t, and not being afraid to say no, shaped who I am today. The Beast’s possibility of redemption and change gives me hope for the future.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas replaces Belle with Feyre, independent and valuing family above all. The sole breadwinner for her family, she is out hunting in the woods when she brings down a huge wolf. The wolf, it turns out, is a faerie - and the High Lord of the Spring Court is out for retribution. In his animal form, he announces himself at Feyre’s house and gives her an ultimatum: He can kill her - a life for a life - or she can live across the Wall, in Prythian. Feyre chooses to follow Tamlin, the High Lord, and hence follows Tamlin into a world of magic, curses, sacrifices and war. Tamlin is taken by the evil Amarantha Under the Mountain, and Feyre once again, follows. To win Tamlin’s freedom, Feyre must complete three trials - or solve an impossible riddle. With the help of Rhysand, a hated High Lord, and sacrificing everything she has along the way, will Feyre be able to defeat Amarantha? And will it be enough for Feyre, for Prythian?
I have to say, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a step up from your usual YA fantasy novel; it’s more complex, darker, sexier. Beauty and the Beast... But more. My favourite novel of 2015, this is one fairytale that will have you wishing for your own beast to save - and feeling like you have the guts to do it, too.

#OnceUponANovember - November Book of the Month
The Reveal - Heartless by Marissa Meyer!
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.
Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
