What the fuck. What the fuck. What game freak employee let this happen?
one turn
The fundamental unit of all gameplay is one turn.
This is true both for the obvious case—the turn–based game, where actions are clearly separated and described—and for the murkier one, such as for sports or "real–time" computer/video games such as first–person shooters, real–time strategy games or MMOs. Any game is really made up of moments of decision, not empty choices, but actual moments of decision: Move this piece. Look to my left, not my right. Play now. Take this feat. Identifying resources is at the core of any smart gameplay, but the ur–resource is your decision making.
The planned meat of this tumblr is an analytical approach to looking at the games we play. Analytical, but there is no clear economic or mathematical approach underlying the analysis, and most readers will probably be driven to call it philosophical—though I would prefer humanist. Games are, at their finest, true leisure activities: They are experiences, social or private, which find the mind both at rest and at fine activity, a process by which life can be enriched.
Not all the posts here will be at that level, and it remains unclear if some of what is analyzed can even hold up to much seriousness. I am, for example, a skeptical player of World of Warcraft—I am unsure of the game's possibility for true leisure, but am drawn to its mathematical problems and social aspects. Further, I will likely use this tumblr as a dump for all sorts of other imagery and link material that engages my other interests.
It's your turn.
