HERB PARIS- Paris quadrifolia- this rare woodland plant grows throughout the British Isles, especially on the east coasts of Ireland, Scotland and England. It is a green-blossom plant, indicative of its potency, that produces one single blue berry. The berry and leaves are slightly toxic. However it was used as a medicinal herb up until recently. I’m the 17th-18th centuries it was used as an antidote for mercury chloride and arsenic that was used to treat syphilis. It was regarded as an aphrodisiac and said to have properties similar to opium. There is an obscure association with wolves and it was once grouped with aconite (Aconitum paradalianches) so possibly used as an arrow poison. It was also once believed to be a form of belladonna. Herb Paris grows in old growth woodland environments.
