I always thought MLA was the easiest lol. It messed me up when one professor made us use Chicago style

I’ve always used MLA, but most of my MA classmates were surprised it even existed. I was actually glad I didn’t have to use APA or anything else, until one of my new professors explained how to do in-text references and said we were supposed to only add the author’s surname and the page number. Apparently, at my home uni we had been using an old version of MLA, and so now I have to get used to this new way to do it...which I find extremely confusing, by the way. But, I’d rather write 3287634743897 in-text cites than one single page with all the works cited references lol

Everything is super confusing. For four years I’ve been told it was completely unacceptable to write phrases such as “in my opinion...”, “I carried out an analysis...”, “I believe...” “I deal with...” etc. because, according to my professors “you’re no one and no one gives a shit about your opinion, sorry”. I understood that and I was fine with it. Now I have two different professors for one course called “Writing a Research Paper”. And one of them is repeating what I just said...but the other wants us to use first person singular because “papers are supposed to show the author’s presence”, and it seems as though every paper published in American journals is following the same pattern. And I just UGHHHH. I’m basically going to do what they want for this course (I’m going to listen to the one who will grade my paper and ignore the one who’s already taught me), but then when I have to write my MA thesis at my home uni, I will do what I’ve always been told lol
