Held at the Oneida Community Mansion House, Memory Hither Come is a braided tapestry created by Jessie Catherine Kinsley in 1928. Kinsley was a member of the Oneida Community, a utopian community dedicated to living selflessly and to the sharing of all property, work, and love, which became Oneida Ltd., a silverware firm committed to the welfare of its employees. Kinsley was an artistic innovator, inventing this original form of textile art by applying the folk-art technique of rug-braiding to tapestry making. In this braided tapestry, Kinsley depicts a map showing the locations of Oneida Community, Ltd factories in the United States, Canada, and England, surrounded by seven local scenes. Kinsley’s evocative braidings, including Memory Hither Come — a “watery glass” upon which memory comes to pass (to paraphrase the William Blake poem the tapestry receives its name from) — are permanently on view at the Oneida Community Mansion House. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear more about Kinsley from Kinsley’s great-granddaughter, Pody Vanderwall, who will be speaking on "The Life and Art of Jessie Catherine Kinsley" at the Mansion House on May 21st! http://www.oneidacommunity.org/…/life-and-art-jessie-cather…
