I have no one else who will understand my frustration with Gossip Girl so here it goes. Is it me, or did Serena magically have an interest in Dan again once Blair started to show an interest? I feel like Serena's interest in Dan is stemmed from the fact that Serena is retarded and has to have all the attention on her at all times. What is your opinion?
Haha, always happy to share Gossip Girl frustration ;) I have to preface this by saying that I made a pact with the universe (it's a long story) to no longer badmouth Serena, so this answer is going to be very diplomatic. It's not that it won't be my honest opinion, but it's just that ever since I started watching the show I've tended to be biased towards Blair over Serena so I've been a lot harsher on Serena and since I've promised not to be now this will be my best attempt at an unbiased opinion.
Honestly, I think Serena's sudden interest in Dan again stemmed from one thing and one thing only: nostalgia. We know from the show that Serena is used to being in the spotlight and has a tendency to want attention. This has been shown pretty evidently I think and stated multiple times by other characters. I think there's also been some evidence in the show of her tendency to get a bit stuck in the past sometimes and resist change. She has a very particular view of the world and when that gets disturbed she usually doesn't seem to handle it very well. This can be traced all the way back to Season 1, when she came back to New York City expecting everything to just go back to the way it was before and instead she had to deal with the reality that everything had changed.
In Season 5 what we have is a similar situation. I think Serena always assumed that Dan still thought about her the same way as he did back in high school, but then she read Inside and realised his opinion on her had changed somewhat. That came as a shock to her and I think made her start to question all kinds of other things, too. She tried to go back to that high school mentality by going through Gossip Girl and realised that probably the best relationship she had was back then with Dan. If you ask me, though, Serena didn't fall in love with present Dan at all this season. I can't see any reason why she would, TBH. This season he's spent all of his time either in Blair's orbit or promoting a book where she isn't even portrayed in a good light. When Blair spelled out in 5x15 pretty clearly why she was falling for Dan, I think it made it quite obvious that Dan has done absolutely nothing recently to warrant Serena falling for him again. I think Serena isn't in love with Dan as he is at the moment, but rather in love with the Dan that she dated when she was a teenager.
The 100th episode showcased it best of all, to be honest. Serena had some cute interactions with Dan in that episode, but they were all based on the past (her teasing him about his former lack of dancing skills, for example). That's exactly what Serena's recent feelings for Dan are, if you ask me: just her clinging on to the past while Dan is looking to the future.
Do you think Georgina was GG all along? I feel like she took control of the site for the "comeback."
My instantaneous reaction was to just assume she was Gossip Girl all along, but on reflection I also think it's more likely that she's only recently taken control of the site. All of the talk at the beginning of the episode about a "new" Gossip Girl seems to suggest that to me.
