I shamefully admit that I've never been a big fan of Halloween, BUT ... I do love a great scary story any time at all. So rather than limit myself to when you all were being inundated with monsters, ghosts, and witches a few weeks ago, I thought I'd save Mercer Mayer's wonderful standby "There's Something in My Attic" (1988) for today, just as you might be starting to weary of Thanksgiving stories and be ready for something different. In this fun twist on the "monster under the bed" trope, a young girl moves into a creaky old house in the country with her parents and is sure that there's something monstrous in the attic. And she's absolutely correct. Only what an anxious, Nervous Nelly of a monster it is!! Nothing fearsome about it! As always, Mercer Mayer's illustrations provide as much of the humour as the words, and the result is a classic story worth poring over again and again despite its seeming simplicity. There's so much I want to say about the Great Brain series, which I was OBSESSED with as a kid and reread countless times, but IG is really more of a visual medium. So I'll just tell you that John D. Fitzgerald's series of books based loosely on his own childhood are set in Utah between 1896 and 1898, and revolve mostly around the exploits and mischief of his clever, slightly amoral brother Tom, nicknamed "The Great Brain". Honestly, though, every character in these stories, illustrated by Mercer Mayer, and published from 1967-1976 (with the exception of the posthumously published "The Great Brain Is Back, 1995, illustrated by Diane deGroat) is beautifully three-dimensional and worth getting to know. Illustrations✏️by #MercerMayer from “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” which we’re reading this week. This retelling modernizes the story a bit with an ode to the Frog Prince - the heroine does penance for trying to break her promise to the frog by going on the journey to different parts of the world to find the castle east of the sun, west of the Moon. I remember reading this version (as well as last week’s version) as a teenager. Although there are a number of fairytale tropes in both, the overall format probably influenced the writing of the protagonists’ journey in The Thirteenth Hour. The paintings in this volume are great for a children’s fantasy book.
