Design Challenge
As you may have noticed by my decreased posting the last few days, I've been very busy, trying to work hard, but very busy. So, I'm hoping that you guys could fill in on some designs to post in the next few days so I can get ahead on Oneria and amass some cards to spoil.
As we've already seen here on the blog, Oneria will contain double-faced cards (aka transform cards) through the use of True Form. A brief reminder, True Form's reminder text reads: When this creature dies, you may discard a card. If you do, transform it instead of putting it into the graveyard. So it functions a bit like Undying but more complex in that it can come back stronger or weaker or with new abilities.
But one keyword really isn't enough to include DFCs in a set, it would be like if the only transform cards in Innistrad were the werewolves, and the ability was R/G exclusive. So while I've got a few different directions to take this, I'm turning outward and crowd sourcing. What neat abilities or themes would you like to see of DFCs to make them transform, particularly in relation to dreams and dreaming? It should ideally be applicable to many cards and not be so powerful that it would be a one-of ability, but there's a lot of free range here.
Have at it and I'm excited to see your designs!
One of the exercises that Magic R&D does is they brainstorm what people would expect from a top-down theme. So they all sat down before Innistrad and said "alright, what does the public think of when we say gothic horror, how can we meet their expectations?" So people said things like werewolfs and vampires, and it was decided very early on that because the things immediately associated were creature-based, Innistrad would have a fair deal of tribal.
And with that, I have a question unrelated to anything Cerian. What do you expect from media about dreams and surrealism? In my headspace, I've already moved on to a second plane, probably a bit too early, since I haven't done enough work on the second Cere set, but I've already got some great ideas. If any readers are familiar with TVTropes, now is a great time to bust out some article titles, when somebody says "dreaming" what tropes do you assume will be included?
