Designed by Kenneth Howes and Jeff Compton and aimed primiryly at the lucrative US export market, the first Series 1 Alpine was launched in 1959, powered by a 1494cc engine and was styled by the Loewy Studios for the Rootes Group. The car made extensive use of components from other Rootes Group vehicles and was built on a modified floorpan from the Hillman Husky estate car, The Alpine went on to be produced in four subsequent revisions until 1968. The Series II of 1960 featured an enlarged 1,592 cc engine of 80bhp with revised rear suspension The Series III was produced between 1963-64 in open and removable hardtop versions with a slightly detuned engine. To provide more room in the boot, twin fuel tanks in the rear wings were fitted. and quarter lights were fitted to the windows. The Series IV of 1964-65, no longer had the less powerful engine, output rose to 82bhp with the engine fed by a single Solex carburettor new rear styling was introduced with the fins largely removed The Series V of 1965-68 was the Alpine final revision, now powered by a five bearing 1725cc engine with twin Zenith-Stromberg semi-downdraught carburettors producing 93 bhp Capable of up to 100mph. In some export markets output of 99bhp (100 PS) was claimed A white Series V Alpine appeared in the 1971 British gangster movie Get Carter. (Michael Caine) Jack Carter is recued by a woman in the white Alpine registration number. It is later featured in the films iconic car chase in a Gateshead multi story car park.
