BE THERE JANUARY 17TH
“E ala ka ‘ī, ka mahi, ka palena! Tomorrow we gather at 9:00am at the Kamehameha Statue to march in the Merrie Monarch Parade as proud aloha ‘āina who stand for Hawai‘i . Just two years ago over 700 people walked the streets of Hilo in honor of Mauna a Wākea. What a powerful moment that was. Now more than ever, our lands, ours waters, and our mountains are calling us to show up, stand up, and speak up for them. It has been so beautiful to see so many people from here and all over the world heeding that call. I look to marching alongside all of you. See you there, lāhui. Bring your flags, positive signs (meaning please refrain from using words like “no” or “against”), your chants, songs, and green shirts! Kū Kia‘i Mauna! They can spend millions of dollars in attorney and legal fees to fight us, they can pay for public relations staff and media polls to divide our communities, they can sponsor politicians to turn their backs on their people and laws of the land, But we will never give up, and we will never back down. March with us. March for our beloved Hawai'i, for the lāhui, for the next 7 generations, for the ʻaina, the kai, and all above, below and beyond. March because you love this place. Show them that you love this place. And show them that you will stand forever for aloha ʻāina and that you will never, ever give up your rights to protect what you love. Visitors, kamaʻāina, hālau members, lovers of the land.”

I am so proud to be one small part of this enormous movement.
But let’s not forget - and this is a reminder for myself as much as it is information for others - this is the first step on a long journey. Run for office, local or national. Volunteer for organizations in your community, or donate if you have the means. Use your privilege, if you have it, to be an ally and stand with other movements that fight for equality, visibility, or access (Black Lives Matter, CAIR, ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Sacred Stone Camp). Know your reps and program their numbers into your phone. And more importantly, be excellent to each other.
If you marched (either physically or digitally), here’s a helpful guide provided by the Women’s March organizers for 10 Actions in the first 100 Days of the new administration.
