[Artwork of the week] - The Regatta, c. 1930 by Kees van Dongen
Kees van Dongen is best known for his portraits. He spent most of his time completing portraiture commissions. He was the typical society artist who lived a bohemian lifestyle and who brought added colour and excitement to the Parisian upper classes. However Kees did not only painted portrait for his patrons, he also painted for pure pleasure and these are his lesser-known landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and parisienne scenes, like this painting, we love <3 The Regatta. It is said that the quality of his later work never matched that of his fauvist period.
