It had to have been about a year and a half ago; I was in my last semester of college, struggling with classes, alone, trying to find an internship and struggling with reasons to not just quit everything. That’s not the start of it all, not by a long shot, but that’s when it really started to pile up - By myself, I didn’t have to hold the façade I’d been carrying for thirteen years, being strong for others while holding off mourning for my dad. With no one else to see, I could silently sit and stew about loneliness and feeling worthless, a burden upon those I loved. In the void of white bricks that surrounded me like I was some criminal in my dorm, my personal identity issues came to the forefront and brought a hell of a lot of confusion upon me. My nightmares came a dime a dozen, featuring my house set ablaze, the last breath of a dearly departed friend who died in my arms, and my own brushes, which had been steadily increasing in recent years. I was close, then, and with no one in a hundred miles to sit with me and talk me through it. So, to distract myself, I dove into Supernatural. I needed to slide into that alternate universe (is there any doubt that those kinds of episodes end up being my favorites?) and visit that place where the love between two brothers can (repeatedly) save the world, to hide from my own reality. It was a mix of a lot of things from the show, too many to list, that helped me keep fighting to graduation.
And then I entered the real world, and realized my reality there was even worse. I had no purpose, and for six months I sat on A Plan: with no job, I couldn’t start paying back my student loans… but they wouldn’t charge me if I wasn’t around, and I really didn’t see a way out. I was trapped in a bad place, and still felt like a nasty weight on my friends and mother, and a disappointment to my father’s memory. So a date was set, most decidedly shoved between the season nine finale and the first due date of my loan. Enough time, at least, for me to see the resolution of the story that had pulled me through to that far, and then sort out my affairs. So, the night of the finale came. I prepared for what I thought were going to be my last days.
And then I got a call about a job. Between the show pushing back That Date and that manager, I was pulled back from the edge again, and firmly tied to solid ground for a while.
It should end there, but it doesn’t. Not really. There have been long periods of time in that last year or so where I lost hope once more - and, without fail, I gathered my resources, fired up Netflix, made cup after cup of tea, and dug around for stuff to cling to, or things to distract my hands as I held on, weathering the storm as well as I could.
2015, notably, started off like hell for me. Seasonal depression hit me like a ton of bricks, and it was all I could do to bear through it, one more day, one more weekend, one more week, one more paycheck, and, after I’d gone that far, I went ahead and went one more month. I’ve fought and fought, and while I didn’t come out completely unscathed, I’m here.
I’m not going to give up. Everything’s still there - that sadness, that loneliness, that self-loathing - but I’m stronger than it, now. For much of it, I’ve got three particular fictional characters (and can I include one very special Impala as well?) to thank, at least for the year and a half that they’ve helped me through. No doubt, now that I have reasons and I know I’ve the strength, I’m going to always keep fighting.
