Day 29: Stars
Dark leaned back as he sat on the ledge of the clock tower, staring up at the clear, starry night sky. "Don't get many of these in the winter." He commented offhandedly.
Daisuke gave no response. No surprise, considering the boy was asleep.
"Kyuu..."
Dark looked down at the little creature in his lap, giving a small smile and petting him fondly. "The clear night, the crisp air, y'know?"
"Kyu." With purred in agreement, nuzzling his hand.
As he looked back into the sky, he counted how many constellations he could find, and his eyes kept straying back to the brightest stars.
"Why do they put stars on top of trees, anyhow." He muttered idly, "Y'know, at Christmas time."
With tilted his head in confusion. "Kyuu?"
"Yeah, I dunno either. That's why I asked." He shrugged, "It was rhetorical though."
"Kyukyuu." With giggled, hopping up onto his shoulder so he could look up with him.
"Stars are weird. But... I guess, like in the old days, they can give people guidance when they're lost, huh?" He mused mostly to himself, looking out at the Azumano nightscape. He spotted a couple windows still lit up bright white or yellow against the darkness, not quite the same shining beacons they had been forty years ago. He wasn't compelled to check them out.
"Y'know... I guess they might put stars on Christmas trees to lead people home when they're lost. People pray when they're lost... or they make wishes," He murmured, "wishes on stars... or whatever they believe in. Whatever keeps them going, I guess, huh?"
"Kyuu?" With nudged him curiously, wondering where his thoughts were going.
"I dunno. It's a little hard to grasp the idea that something so simple... can give so much hope." He held out his hand, as if to catch the snow, but it wasn't snowing. "They're just... lights in the dark, really, but... they grant wishes and give you good dreams... right?"
With nuzzled him, purring something. Dark looked playfully appalled--sometimes he understood what With was saying, after all, even without With saying a single thing.
"What, you think Daisuke's like that, huh?"
"Kyuu!"
"Tch, he's anything but a star!"
He chuckled, looking up at the sky once more. He was glad Daisuke was asleep, so he couldn't make fun of Dark for making wishes on stars. So that Daisuke couldn't hear Dark's greatest wish.
Because, just a little bit, Dark had hope that Daisuke could grant it.
