Sorry for the delay, but I'm happy to present the first of the "Detroit Facts" I'll be posting to my account. Since moving to the city, one of the first things I learned was that every building here has a story and I want to help share some of them as I find them trekking through Detroit. More than anything, this is a way of sharing some of the wonderful treasures Detroit has to offer with its current residents as well as people all over the world! For my first post, I wanted to showcase an example of Detroit's humanitarian side - especially in times as politically and socially dark as these - and what better way to do that than by pointing out the First Congregational Church of Detroit? For over 20 years beginning in 1840, this church served as a safehouse in "Midnight," which was a code word for "Detroit" at the time, for runaway slaves fleeing the South along the Underground Railroad. From the church, passengers would take their final journey into Canada for freedom. #detroitfacts #onlyinthed #codenamemidnight #detroitartist (at Midtown Detroit)
