A postcard I sent from Jeju, South Korea last year arrived today — just one day shy to be counted as a year travel from Jeju to Catbalogan. It was my second time in Jeju when I attended last year the CIFAL Workshop on Cultural Tourism for Sustainable Development with fellow delegates from across Asia Pacific. Wondering how my co-delegates are doing now in their respective cities and countries made me miss the cool weather and the tranquil feel that “Only Jeju” can give. The haenyeo divers of Jeju-do had incredible lung capacity; they could hold their breath while diving to catch seafood. They used to be at the center of a matriarchal society on the island. Some women still dive but now they’re part of the island’s mythology.
