There was a strange blue wooden box sat firmly at the corner of the estate, and Rose had to admit that she was intrigued. Mostly because she was sure it had never been there before -- and she'd lived all nineteen years of her life on this estate, she would know. And yet, though it had been there the whole day, no one had once made mention of it. It was like it had always been there.
Didn't anyone notice?
So Rose, far too curious for her own good, called back to her mother that she was going out and slipped out of the flat, jogging down the stairs and across the little square between the estate buildings to get a better look at the thing. What was a 'police public call box'? She read the sign on the front, eyebrows furrowed, and pulled the little compartment open to reveal an old phone. But when she put it to her ear -- no dial tone. So she hung it back up, closed the compartment, and tried the door. Locked.
What was this thing? She knocked it experimentally -- definitely wood. Shook the door again -- but locked. Who would leave a wooden box on the side of the road and lock the doors?
