Lake Agassiz was a massive lake that at its largest extent around 13,000 years ago covered 440,000 sq km of northern America. To put this in perspective that’s much bigger than any lake in the world today and around the same size as the Black sea. Agassiz covered much of today's Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, northern Minnesota, eastern North Dakota, and Saskatchewan.  The lake was formed as a result of melting glacial ice as the last Ice Age began to end and the continental ice sheet began to retreat northwards over the US- Canadian border. The lake partially drained and refilled a number of times before the final melting of the Hudson Bay ice around 8,200 years ago, which caused almost complete drainage into the sea. It is thought that the drainage of Agassiz caused a global sea level rise of up to 2.8m (9.2ft). This massive sea level rise affected early human civilization as well as climate. Regalia and Rhythm; Ottawa Aboriginal Summer Solstice Festival

The light was already fading on the second longest day of the year when the taxi pulled up at the Aboriginal Summer Solstice Festival in Ottawa. I’d been invited to the soft opening; the real celebrations beginning the following day. However, it was my first pow-wow (pau wau), and although only a limited number of dancers were present, they still provided plenty of colourful, and vibrant dancing.
