Ares has a crush
Feeling romantic and problematic so let's GO!
Ares having like a secret attraction to Hephaestus is compelling. Like of course it's very toxic as the war god quite literally is one of the many stresses that make the blacksmith's immortal life worse than Tartarus (well not worse but damn near close).
Though imagine if Ares tries his hands at romance and being an admirer from afar. He asks Aphrodite how to go about it, of course lying to say he wanted to write to her but more so to send Hephaestus inklings of hope and love.
He never sent the first few. The irrational, childish, and overall brutish tones were more akin to the likes of Zeus' attempts at flirtation.
But eventually he writes one that's just right. He's able to put into words the complex feelings he has for the blacksmith, the husband of his lover, and the secret capture of his heart.
He hides nearby and listens patiently for the god to read it. Second by second he slowly regrets his choice until he hears the soft sobbing of the blacksmith.
Sobs of surprise? Sobs of sadness? The god of war dares to peak inside to see the blacksmith clinging the letter to his chest with a soft smile on his lips.
That image alone burned itself deep with the god's heart.
Every other day the war god would set aside just enough time to vomit up his emotions onto paper before sneakily placing them within the blacksmith's reach.
With each letter he witnessed as the god of fire's shoulder relaxed, his posture more at ease, and overall the sadness that fogged his eyes dimming. And Ares, the god of war and the god most despised, was the cause of it.
Though it burns that he cannot touch him. That he cannot let it be known it is him. He knows Hephaestus well. The smith would shatter before him. He'd feel embarrassed and accuse Ares of making him a fool.
Ares accepts this though. Admire from the shadows and get a fraction of the glow. Whenever he visits, he puts on his façade. The angry, brutish, and black hearted man who held no regard for the smith outside of his weapons.
Hephaestus, though, fueled by his letters seemed unaffected by his coldness and irritation. He'd respond calmly, showing nothing but utmost hospitality. And Ares felt the lump in his throat each time.
That was until one evening, an evening in which he was careless and woozy, he stumbled into the workshop. He was drunk on blood and rage. The war never ceasing and his mind melting with violence.
As he stumble around to grab his weapon of choice, Hephaestus stands with crossed arms.
"Ares," The blacksmith speaks up.
"Silence," The god of war barks. He presses his palm to his throbbing head.
"Shield," The blacksmith speaks up, stepping forward and reaching down to grab it. "That's what you need."
"Yes whatever," He hisses, attempting to snatch it only for the blacksmith to pull it back, a cocky look on his face with a raised brow.
"My love," He says, mimicking the war god's voice. "For you are my shield in the endless chaos. The sound of your laughter drowns those agonizing screams. Oh how I wish the taste of blood was replaced by the taste of your lips. My shield, my love, you keep me safe from myself, even from afar."
Ares' eyes widened. He wants to be happy. He wants to be glad that Hephaestus has cracked it and isn't rejecting him. Instead, he yanks the shield and runs away.
Hephaestus is one of the few good things on this mountain. He refuses to taint him.
