Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Dean patted the top of the Impala fondly. “See? Here and done in less than twelve hours.” He said to Sam.
“Yeah, and Y/n was exactly right!” Sam replied, storing the witch killer in the trunk.
“That’s right. Try giving her a call now and tell her we’ll be home in the morning. For now let’s find a motel to get some shut eye.” Dean suggested, ducking into the driver’s seat while Sam got into the passenger side.
After a couple rings, Sam turned off his phone. “She didn’t answer.” He told his brother and didn’t notice the slight tightening of Dean’s hands on the steering wheel.
“What? What if something happened to her?” Dean seemed genuinely worried, surprising Sam.
“Or, and I know this might sound crazy, she could be asleep. It is past midnight.” Sam reminded, casting a glance at the dark and cloudy sky.
Dean nodded, seemingly reluctantly. “I know, sorry. It’s just that if something happens to her, it’s our fault.”
Sam studied his brother for a few moments in the darkness of the Impala, knowing his brother’s little facial expressions very well. Finally, he sighed. “You’re right. Tell you what, if you can stay up an hour more, let’s book it back to the bunker and make sure she’s all right. Then you can sleep in your own bed.”
Some of Dean’s tenseness relaxed and he scoffed. “Yeah I can handle it. In fact, I’ll get us there in forty five minutes.”
Throughout the ride, Dean’s nerves lessened and his restless nights caught up. By the time they reached the bunker, Dean was practically a zombie, trudging down the stairs with his eyes only half open.
“I’ll go check on Y/n, you go to bed, Dean.” Sam ordered, following him down the hallway of bedrooms.
“Yeah, g’night.” Dean mumbled, turning into his bedroom. For some reason, the lights were on and he squinted, turning them off right away while tearing his shirt off as well.
Dean ran a hand tiredly over his face and laid down on the soft memory foam, already practically asleep. But the leveling of his bed wasn’t quite right, and he turned to see what was happening just as Sam’s voice came from down the hall.
“DEAN! Y/N ISN”T IN HER ROOM!” The noise woke the intruder just as Dean realized who she was and Sam burst through the door, turning on the light as he did. “Dean,” Sam gasped, out of breath. “I don’t know- oh!”
You were mortified. Sam stood in the doorway with a slightly-less-than-surprised look on his face, Dean laid beside you under the blanket, seemingly naked from what you could see, and you were in his bedroom with very little memory of how you got there.
A quick inspection of yourself denied your worst fear and you breathed a short sigh of relief. “Thank God, we didn’t sleep together.” You mumbled, not thinking about what you were saying. “I mean, not that I wouldn’t - not that you're not - I mean-” You stumbled, horrifically embarrassing yourself even further.
Sam burst out laughing while Dean looked like he might have blushed, though you couldn't be sure. “No we didn’t sleep together!” You might have sensed a little disappointment in his voice but probably not. “What the hell are you doing in my bed?” Dean questioned like he couldn’t believe he had to ask.
It was your turn to blush this time, looking guiltily at the man next to you who still had yet to put some clothes on. “Your bed is really comfy.” You defended, patting the mattress lovingly. “And I swear I hadn’t meant to fall asleep, it just sort of happened and I’m so sorry.”
Dean glared daggers in your direction until Sam finally regained control of his vocal chords. “C’mon Y/n. Dean’s super tired from the drive. I’ll take you to bed.” He extended a hand your way and you nodded, taking his hand to drag you from the soft bed.
Dean’s hand clenched on top of the mattress like he was restraining himself but you didn’t get a chance to ask what from before you were whisked away. “Wait what time is it?” You asked Sam once you were out in the hallway.
“Around 2:30 in the morning.” He responded, taking a quick glance at his watch.
“Wow, why didn’t you just grab a motel in Nebraska?” You had already reached your room, leaning against one side of the doorframe while Sam leaned against the other.
Sam laughed a little. “Well when you wouldn’t pick up your phone, Dean got worried and decided we had to hightail it back here to check on you.”
“Well that was nice of him.” You commented thoughtfully. “I thought he didn’t like me or something.”
Sam shrugged. “I have no idea what’s going on with him lately. You were right by the way, it was a witch pretending to be other creatures. And not very good at covering up he tracks either, once we got the details from the police, she was very easy to find.”
“Well good, I’m glad you found her.” You yawned. “Did you have any heart to heart conversations with Dean while you were gone? I love those.”
Shaking his head, “Nope, pretty standard procedure, sorry to disappoint.” He fixed a piece of hair that was sticking out weirdly on your head while you yawned again. “Go get some sleep, Y/n. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Okay, night Sam.” You went in your room and were asleep before your head hit the pillow.
Sam on the other hand, stayed up a little longer outside your bedroom, remembering the conversation him and Dean had had in the car on the way up to Nebraska.
----Flashback----
“So what’s up with you? You’re almost bipolar around Y/n. Do you not like her or something?” Sam asked Dean after passing the ‘Welcome to Nebraska’ sign he’d seen plenty of times.
Dean shrugged. “No, she’s fine. I don’t know man, she’s not my normal bestie or whatever. Way too hyper.”
“She’s a lot like Charlie I think, a little geeky and fun.” Sam commented, smiling at the memory of watching Star Wars with you the other night.
Dean shook his head. “Except what she’s geeky about is us. And, don’t get me wrong, she’s beautiful, incredibly beautiful....” He trailed off and Sam cleared his throat in order to get his attention again. “Sorry, anyway I don’t know. Can we just get this hunt done please?”
So they went, they did the job, and Dean talked very little about you until the scare later that night. Of course, though Dean didn’t know what was happening, Sam had his own suspicions. ‘It’s about time’ He’d thought to himself after catching the two of you in Dean’s bed.
His more logical brain knew that it was an accident but he liked the thought that maybe it wouldn’t be in the near future.
-----End of Flashback----
Sam shook his head with a small smile, glancing at your door, then at Dean’s. “Idiots.” He muttered and headed off to bed.
“Okay Dean, you’re right. The water pressure here is marvelous.” You stated as you entered the kitchen the next morning. The elder Winchester looked up with a confused expression. When he saw you, clad in one of Sam’s sweatshirts and sweatpants, hair wet and hanging loosely around your shoulders, he almost seemed to blush, clearing his throat and looking back down into his coffee. “Touchy.” You joked, going over to the coffee maker.
Sam wasn’t up yet, and Dean looked tired, hunched over his mug with a half done book in front of him. You decided you wouldn’t bother him again, especially after what happened last night.
That is, until the coffee maker proved empty. “Is there more coffee somewhere?” You questioned, opening a couple cabinets that also didn’t reveal your needed energy source.
“No.” Dean’s gruff, sleep ridden voice sounded behind you. He cleared his throat again. “I finished it this morning.”
“Dean! C’mon man!” You complained, setting your mug back down with a huff.
Suddenly, Dean was out of his chair, facing you with a fuming expression. “Well it’s not your coffee in the first place, Y/n.” He practically growled. “In fact, those aren’t your clothes, that’s not your shower, and this is not your home!”
You stumbled back a little, wide eyed and almost scared. Despite your best efforts to push them back, tears came to your eyes. “I-I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean-” You choked out pathetically.
Dean’s face softened. “Oh Y/n, no I’m sorry-”
You shook your head, wiping away some of the tears. “No, you’re right! I’m just gonna...” And you bolted, running out of the kitchen before you embarrassed yourself even more. You passed Sam in the doorway.
“Y/n? What’s wrong?” He asked when he noticed your tears but you pushed past him and ran down the hallway. You took the couple necessary twists and ended up back in ‘your’ room.
“Castiel? I need you.” A flutter of wings and you turned to see the angel in all his glorious trench coat. You smiled a little at him through your tears, relieved he had heard you.
“Y/n? What’s wrong?” Cas asked, doing that adorable little head tilt. “Are you hurt?” He was already lifting two fingers towards your forehead when you shook your head.
“No. I-I’m fine, physically at least.” You stuttered. “Do you have any more information on getting me home?”
Castiel looked surprised. “You don’t like it here?” He wondered, staring at you intently as you sat on your bed and placed your head in your hands.
“No, not anymore.” You whimpered. “I just want to go back to my home where I’m not a bother to anyone.”
You heard Cas sigh and looked up. “Dean did this didn’t he?” You nodded slowly and the angel sat down next to you. “I’m sure he didn’t mean whatever he said, Y/n. I know he’s been getting very little sleep for... certain reasons, and he’s walking on a very tight rope. I wouldn’t believe anything he says.”
You sniffed. “Really?”
Castiel nodded. “Now I know it’s customary to hug someone if they are crying,” He opened his arms to you. “Would you like a hug?”
You felt like sobbing all over again at this little offer from an angel who has just met you and you know does not like hugs. “Yes please.” And he enveloped you in a quick but warm and comforting embrace.
“There, now I’m gonna keep looking but try to enjoy yourself here okay?” You nodded again, wiping the rest of the tears away and giving him a small smile. “Goodbye Y/n.”
And he was gone.
Sam watched you run down the hallway and turned to look at Dean, whose hands dragged over his face in regret. “What did you do?”
“I may or may not have lost my temper.” Dean admitted sorrowfully.
Sam groaned. “Dean, c’mon man! What is going on with you? Y/n is a sweet girl who is in our care right now. Why can’t you just get along?”
“Because Sammy...” Dean took a deep breath. “I couldn’t sleep at all last night after what happened. She makes me... I don’t know, feel things. Things I’ve only really felt a couple times before.”
“And that scares you?” Sam asked, not surprised at his brother’s sudden confession.
Dean scoffed. “Of course not. I just don’t know what it means and I don’t want to hurt her.” He looked at the door you had left from and winced. “Well, anymore than I already have.”
“Then tell her how you feel.” Sam urged, crossing his arms to show he was serious.
The elder brother shook his head vigorously. “No, not happening. Besides, she probably likes you anyway, and there’s no way she could like me especially after how I’ve treated her the last couple days.”
Sam gave a short laugh. “I can’t argue with her being resistant around you, but trust me, she doesn’t like me. Y/n is like my little sister or something, and has zero feelings for me, told me herself.” He almost seemed proud of this fact.
“Then what am I supposed to do Sammy?” Dean questioned, slumping against the table in dismay.
“Well first, apologize. Then, try treating her nicely, talk to her, play a game, watch a movie, do something.” The younger brother offered, walking over to the counter to grab an apple. “Just be yourself, not the moody one you’ve been the past couple days.”
Dean shook his head again. “I don’t think so Sam. I mean, of course I’ll apologize but I don’t know if I want these feelings to stick around. She’s going back to her own dimension in a few days and then what? What am I supposed to do then?”
Sam shrugged. “I think if you really like her, you’ll figure out a way.”
“Yeah, thanks for the chick flick line. I’m gonna go find her.” Dean grumbled, pushing off of the table and walking into the hallway with a distraught expression.
Sam smiled to himself and grabbed his phone. After a few rings, the person picked up. “Hey, so I think you were right. but we need a new plan.”
