Luthor's Cricket part 23

Phantom phased both himself and Lex, who he was carrying into their penthouse and set him on the couch before grabbing a first aid kit from the bathroom and sat down on the floor next to Lex.
Lex was about to start with his questioning when another bright flash of light happened. Lex blinked the afterimage away to see Phantom now sporting black hair, paler skin, seemingly taller, and no longer sporting the baby fat of a young teen.
“What was THAT Phantom?!” Lex yelled from where he laid the couch as the now black haired man tightened the bandage on his thigh while sitting on the floor.
“Me directly interfering.” The man simply said.
“Direct- the summoning specifically said you couldn't do stuff like that!”
“And yet I was able to throw your unused toaster in the trash, where it belongs, and make muffins. Your point?” The former teen snarked.
“P- Point?! Just what the hell are you?” Lex growled.
“A ghost with too much time and curiosity.” Phantom sighed.
“What else are you lying about then? Are you actually stuck to me, or was that just to annoy and lure me into a false sense of security?” Lex accused.
Phantom snorted. “If I wanted to leave, I definitely could. I am powerful enough to break the spell completely. Afterall, I have been wearing it down to let me interact with the world.”
“So you didn't break it with this-” Lex gestured to Phantom's entirety “pallet swap?”
Phantom barked a laugh at that, then took Lex's hand.
The first thing he noticed was that the spirit's hand was warm, then as his fingers were guided to the other hands pulse point he felt the unmistakable thump of a heartbeat.
“Wha-”
“A spirit can't be bound when they are not dead”
Lex stared at the offending wrist, barely acknowledging the smarmy tone the words possessed.
“Why.” Lex asked, still staring at their hands.
“Why what? Why am I still here? Why I allowed myself to be bound? There are many “Why's” to be had.”
“Yes, why…. everything.” Lex finally looked at the man.
Phantom looked tired, in the way that Lex saw in ER doctors, in defending lawyers when they lose an unwinnable case, in mothers with multiple children who finally got some peace as the kids run rampant at the park. Phantom finally spoke, tears forming in his ice blue eyes.
“At first it was just a ‘ya I got time to mess with some random dudes’ but after the first day I realized, I missed this. Living. The world I was born on has been dead and turned to dust for… well I don't know for how long at this point. Killed by a small group of humans with a terrified hate against Lady Death herself. I was eighteen when they really started to push for ‘change’.”
