A fool.
It felt wrong to think ill of the dead, but it’s all Titus could think of as he looked at the marshal’s body.
A fool who died protecting a king who did not deserve it. Who would have, and did, sacrifice him for the safety of himself and his son. And Cor had been more than willing to play the pawn.
Loyal to a fault.
He had been like that once; young and foolish. Devoted to the cause. But as the years went by, and as he became the right hand man to the king, he saw more and more hollow promises, selfish actions. It jaded him, and is what lead him to be where he was now.
‘Not so immortal anymore, is he?’
Of course it would have something snarky to say, but the monster’s jeers went unacknowledged, as they often did.
Parting words died on his tongue. ‘Rest well, friend.’ It felt wrong and disingenuous to say such a thing after all he’d done. Cor had been the closest thing he had come to consider a friend, but he’d never put such a label to their dynamic. Now he stood above the man’s remains after coming across them. He hadn’t been the one to slay him, but he might as well have been. After all, he headed this attack on the side of the empire.
And so instead, he turned and departed, leaving the immortal’s broken body for someone else to find and take care of.
My muse is dead. Tell me how yours is dealing with it.
