A note about OOOT
( This post is in reference to my fanfic “One and One and One Is Three” which, for the lost and curious, you can find here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11253540/chapters/25157988 )
Helpful structural note: The first two chapters of OOOT are the introductory chapters, and then the next six chapters come in 2 groups of 3 chapters, one chapter dealing with each of the main universes. Therefore: Chapters 3, 4, & 5 happen mostly simultaneously in Delta, Beta, and Prime universes, respectively. And then, chapters 6, 7, & 8 happen mostly simultaneously in Beta, Prime, and Delta universes, respectively. After this, things become more interesting.
Here is a first draft of the first of the Charts to Help OOOT Make More Sense.
I’m posting the next chapter tonight so I wanted to get this up even though I should probably find a better format... In any case, let me know if this is helpful, and what would make it more so. Thanks!!
I saw “Here Comes Tomorrow” on the clearance rack at Half Price Books and was overcome with a fit of nostalgia, so I bought it. The story’s not as good as I remember it being... and I didn’t remember it being that good. But this moment?
Pretty much this exact frame...
is the basis for how I write Phoenix and pretty much why I find the character so interesting. So, that was cool to experience again. (New X-Men #154)
I just posted the last chapter of “One and One and One is Three” at AO3, and already I think I’m having post-partum pangs… The genesis of OOOT happened in April of 2014, so even though it looks like I wrote and posted >325,000 words in 11 months, the story’s been with me for a bit longer than that.
Since seeing the movie in 2012 I’d been fighting being drawn into the Avengers fandom, with little success. I had three other fandoms I was trying to bow out of writing fanfics for, trying to finish up the stories I still had open, and- the plan was- then to move on to writing more original fiction. I’d had a couple stories accepted by a publisher, so it seemed like a good idea to see if I could make some money at this thing I spent all my time doing. Reading was all I needed to do in this new fandom. I’d be content with that.
In April of 2014 I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was at that point that I realized, the pull of fandom wasn’t going away. I renegotiated with myself. Okay, I told myself. You can write one story for this fandom. But then move on.
So, I bargained with myself, if I was only going to get one story, it had better have every single thing in it that I wanted to write about. This would include my several, contradictory, pairings that I shipped. But, include them in a way that made sense to me, because I couldn’t see myself writing anything that included partner swapping. And that was where the idea for OOOT came from. It took me awhile to work out how I wanted everything to go, and every new movie that came out gave me things I wanted to add in, but I’m pleased with how it turned out.
Of course, I’ve renegotiated with myself again, seeing as fighting the grip of fandom is impossible. There will be many other stories to follow OOOT (my fingers are itching to write a redo for Thor: Ragnarok, and I’m really into the idea of denying the existence of Infinity War in at least one of these universes), and probably stories in other series, and fandoms, as well. Because writing fics makes me happy. And I like being happy. I hope reading my fics has brought some happiness to the lives of others as well. :)
A few hours after I post a new chapter, my brain has a sudden anxiety fit where I’m all, OMG, did I FIX all of the STUPID things, or did I FORGET and just post it?!!?!??! And then I have to talk myself out of it because, It’s okay, it’s done now, you’ll just have to fix it in an edit later.
