WITH MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S around the corner, jaden is feeling uncharacteristically less than. normally, theatre is an escape for them, a activity that they don’t even need to think about, but here recently the weight of the society is taking over their mind. everything feels weird. the air around the manor is eerie, almost like everyone is keeping a secret and jaden is on the outside. the prodigies are busying themselves with opals, and with each other, jaden unsure of where they’re supposed to be going. on one hand, what happens if they’re that one prodigy that doesn’t fully make it? what if they let dante down? on the other, what happens if they just can’t find joy in the theatre anymore? what if they flunk out of strathmore and are forced to pick something else? who is going to catch them now that august is gone? 

YOUR MUSE CAN sense a shift in jaden, something is off - which may not be so unusual, but it's apparent enough to raise eyebrows. they’re a lending arm to take their mind somewhere that isn't the worst possible scenario. coffee breaks, movie dates, and picnics help take jadens mind off of the weight of the world and their situation, and your muse’s shoulder is always there to lend advice and help push them out of the rutt they’ve found themselves in. your muse is kind, a light at the end of a tunnel.

i don't need anyone / i don't need anyone / i just need everyone and then some

THEN: jaden and your muse weren't fast friends. however, the disgusting amounts of school projects meant they spent so much time together that honestly, they were just tired of looking at them. at first glance, they were into lace and love and rosé (or something opposite obviously). jaden was into leather and cigarettes and jack on the rocks. it was hard to find trust in them, to find a confidant that they could bring their walls down for and believe in their gut that they wouldn't leave. because not everyone leaves. right? their ability to know precisely what jaden thinks before they can get the words out made them a perfect match, the best of friends. your muse knew exactly when jaden's heart rate was rising, when they were getting too worked up for their own good, and knew how to calm them down. because of them, jaden learns to ask for help when and if they need it, rather than keeping to themselves and figuring everything out on their own. your muse is the first person jaden tells about hudson, about their affair. they were intoxicated, enough that they didn't realize what they were saying. now the cat is out of the bag, and things are weird, to say the least. they could see the casual looks your muse was giving hudson in the hallways, the strange silences when they talked about him or when your muse found out they were heading to his place for the night. they didn't think anything of it, they couldn't. they were happy. 

NOW: it’s common knowledge that hudson was a garnet only a few years prior. it’s common knowledge and it’s not necessarily knowledge that jaden would like for your muse to hold on to. hudson’s place in the society makes things even more uncomfortable for jaden and you can feel the relationship straining. what once was an inseparable bond has turned into missed calls, only catching the back of jaden’s hair before they’re out of sight, and lonely walks back to the dorms from the library every night. meanwhile, on jaden’s end, they’re struggling hard with the fact that hollis knows about hudson, they can’t find their place with the rest of the circlet let alone the society as a whole, and they’re backsliding in their classes as well. jaden’s not going to admit to needing help, but you know that they do without having to ask.

build love, build god, build provinces / build calluses, break promises / cause i could never hold a perfect thing and not demolish it … 

THEN: they were the first relationship jaden partook in post rehab, and really, post august. it was hard. everything is rocky, they were one thing and then another. they were happy, but then everything was wrong. they were so innocent. so fucking kind and sweet. in the beginning, it bothered jaden, everything about loving them and wanting to be around them, bothered jaden. why couldn't they turn off that light? they knew they would get hurt. but their fucking smile… and maybe that's why jaden ran to the hudson in the first place. to be the one to hurt, and not get hurt. to be with someone that couldn't possibly break their heart because they would never get attached? turns out, they still got attached.

NOW: it's weird confiding in your muse post hudson. things felt normal, but they definitely weren't. they're using your muse as a shield, a security blanket almost. jaden can pretend things are normal in public if they still have their hand to hold. it was rocky, the first few months after the hudson debacle. but eventually, finding the friendship they had in one another made things comfortable. it was a new normal for them; stolen kisses, late-night fights ending in each other's arms. they were easy before, and now it was as if they were the secret.

JADEN HAS VIEWED the society like a sort of joke since the beginning, but now, things are getting exceedingly more interesting. tying a bunch of second years to statues? that’s real shit. however with that said, they’re stuck. what is the point of the society? where are they supposed to be going? what is the goal that they had in mind with all of this? 

YOUR MUSE IS a mentor to jaden, helping them navigate through the society in a way that makes everything click for them. it feels forced in the beginning, maybe it’s the product of an informal or another task, and they aren’t opening up as much as they could be. they’re shy, afraid of the unknown, but eventually become willing to let your muse in.

i. what a sad little life, jane ( open to all )

a ballad for a quirky rivalry & a come dine with me inspired plot

fully inspired by the downright bizarre student societies at my university and this video. two members of your typical, average, book club with a twist. every november without fail the club participates in a come dine with me inspired week for charity. five members of the strathmore literary club host one dinner party each for the others for five consecutive days. at the end of the week’s rotation, they each write the name of a member who has particularly impressed them (be it from their hosting style or the meal itself) and put it into an envelope to be drawn from. the winner of the week gets to donate the money to a charity of their choosing! but... what would happen if either eliot or your muse took a year’s loss to heart? whether it be underhanded tactics or just bad hosting, whatever occurred during this year’s charity week has left a sour taste in someone’s mouth. and with the next literary club meeting on the horizon tensions are higher than ever. 

 this could apply either in a previous year or be an upcoming plot that could cause a lil bit of tension!

i thought of this and my mind instantly went one of those british family holiday camps that have like... the ferris wheel and pantomime performances ( i specifically thought of butlins ) but this could genuinely be a vacation anywhere in the world. just two children who met on a holiday and to whom two weeks felt like a lifetime of friendship. could honestly go in any direction but some fun thoughts are shared memories and time capsules (!) or them meeting now and desperately wanting things to feel the same and they don’t as they’ve grown into two different people. 

iii. we’re standing in oceans ( taken by isadora ) 

a ballad for adventure & a twist on confidants

( song inspo: oceans - vallis alps & luna - bombay bicycle club & explore - sundara karma )

with tensions at an all time high in the manor, the thought of escapism (even if it’s just for the afternoon) seems awfully tempting. but eliot’s never been one to dive headfirst into an adventure. presenting ‘fifty great things to do in the south-east’. a bucket list of activities that can be done in and around london and the south-east of england thought up of a tipsy evening over a glass of wine when ‘wouldn’t it be easier to do outreach by just going to the predecessors’ houses?’ seemed like a logical statement. and he can’t go back on his word now!  now they’ve become weekend confidants, the kind who share things on a car journey to never repeat aloud again. but it’s nice just for a few hours to get away from it all. (as a former tour guide for a museum in london i will happily provide the list too if wanted, just as a little bonus).

i once wrote that eliot made the headline of a single daily mail article and i would love to expand on that. essentially, just a connection that fizzled out before it ever really began due to media attention. i envisage they were two people much on the cusp of a great, big, something pre-strathmore until a disagreement about something outside a fashion week afterparty became publicised. it could have ended amicably or alternatively just have been an absolute wreck but we can work that out!

eliot’s used to feeling like he doesn’t quite belong in certain social spheres and for the most part, it’s something he still battles with in belonging to the society. perhaps it’s why he picks up on the other not feeling quite at home in recent weeks. it’s become a bit of a personal side mission to ensure they feel included and more at ease during their instruction. it could also be a nice opportunity for them to bond a bit more and for him to share his own experiences to empathise!

          𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘  ––––––  the opal society, more than ever, seems like bullshit to you. you are angry, upset, distraught–– you can think of many words that echo your insatisfaction, and this initiation process no longer looks like something you want to be a part of. life is a burden heavy enough without a secret society wrapped in the mayhem of horny young adults tying you to statues. you definitely didn’t expect for dante, of all people, to become a guiding light –– the one that took his own initiation as a joke, broke the rules, and is known for frequently getting in trouble? how the fuck could that guy give you answers? truth be told, he doesn’t –– nothing is ever easy with him, it seems, and no surface-level impression seems to make him justice. the both of you now speak frequently, and he helps you stabilize your thoughts –– the guy can manage to give out some decent advice, at least, and you might even trust him, now. he likes pros  &  cons lists, and also vaguely pointing at the light at the end of the tunnel, just enough so it will fill you with hope. it is enough, for now.

           𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐋𝐋  ––––––  dante is a disappointment to you. he let you down or hurt your feelings, and you can’t forgive him for that ( and you won’t even try, because he doesn’t deserve it ). there are plenty of good memories attached to his name, but it all has turned sour, and you want to watch it crash  &  burn. he might try and make amends, but you know he doesn’t even care for you, deep down –– he is trying for your sake, perhaps, but not because he nourishes an affection for you, and that stings. if it has to be like this, you want at least to let him know how irresponsible actions are not easily forgiven. a broken heart for another seems fair trade to you, and you no longer care for entertaining an endless discussion, as long as you’re on the winning side.

(  ♫  )     —     josephine’s  life  between  scotland  and  strathmore  is  vague  at  best,  other  than  she  moved  into  her  own  place  after  graduation  and  spent  a  year  working  in  london  before  her  first  year  at  strathmore  began  (  a  time  frame  that  puts  her  in  line  with  the  opals  first  year  /  immediately  pre  -  strathmore  prodigies  ).  a  bond  formed  from  a  chance  encounter  by  the  river’s  edge  one  summer  or  fall  evening,  two  strangers  simply  sharing  company  and  conversation  before  strathmore  or  the  society  or  life  had  the  chance  to  intervene.  one  meeting  turned  into  several,  someone  she  might  consider  one  of  her  first  friends  in  the  city  and  they  became  more  of  a  rock  in  her  life  than  she  would  ever  admit  to  them,  letting  her  forget  the  darkness  of  the  world  for  even  a  short  while.  perhaps  time,  and  strathmore  and  society  duties,  have  created  distance  between  them  that  they’re  not  sure  how  to  close.  not  in  a  bad  way,  of  course,  but  in  the  way  that  life  always  seems  to.

aesthetics  :  the  warm  glow  of  the  street  lamps  as  blue  skies  blossom  into  shades  of  flame,  shoulders  brushing  against  one  another  as  steps  fall  in  tandem,  quiet  laughter  that  melts  into  clamoring  of  the  crowd,  the  same  sense  of  ease  that  accompanies  picking  up  long  -  forgotten  novel,  secrets  shared  the  same  as  clandestine  smiles,  cobblestone  paths  that  lead  to  nowhere  in  particular,  the  twinkle  of  an  excited  gaze,  the  comforting  press  of  fingertips  into  the  crook  of  an  elbow,  a  collection  of  polaroids  tucked  away  like  perfect  memories.

(  ❤  +  ❤  +  ❤  )     —     two  people  that,  under  any  other  (  or  relatively  normal  )  circumstances,  would  certainly  not  have  considered  themselves  friends.  but  recent  circumstances  have  brought  them  closer  and  they’ve  found  a  sort  of  solace  in  one  another.  separately,  they’ve  seemed  to  function  just  fine  on  their  own,  or  they’ve  simply  done  everything  they  can  to  keep  it  all  to  themselves.  perhaps  it’s  a  slow  -  burn  friendship,  they  didn’t  like  each  other  all  too  much  starting  out  or  simply  butt  heads  over  the  most  trivial  of  things,  but  they  slowly  grow  to  lean  on  each  other  for  small  things,  figuring  there  are  worse  people  to  rely  on.  or  perhaps  it’s  been  a  friendship  that’s  been  blossoming  slowly,  both  caring  a  great  deal  about  the  other  (  even  if  they  never  really  talk  about  it  )  &  who  they  trust  to  talk  about  secrets,  feelings,  the  society,  you  name  it  without  worrying  about  repercussions  or  what  they  may  think  of  them.  two  people  that  come  to  rely  on  each  other,  one  way  or  another,  and  will  do  anything  to  help  them  succeed.  platonic  twin  flames  who  know  each  other  almost  as  well  as,  if  not  better,  than  they  know  themselves.

aesthetics  :  pinky  promises  shared  in  an  empty  room,  waiting  with  baited  breath  as  quiet  confessions  are  offered,  hesitant  smiles,  hours  of  long  conversation  that  slip  into  comfortable  silence,  trusting  someone  to  keep  a  secret  you  would’ve  taken  to  the  grave,  arms  embraced  in  a  hug  that  borders  on  almost  too  tight,  a  knock  on  your  bedroom  door  at  two  am,  long  night  drives  with  no  destination  in  mind,  shared  blankets  under  a  starry  sky.

(  ✧  /  reversed  )     —     josephine  is  truly  soft  -  hearted,  down  to  her  very  core,  and  is  often  far  too  kind  and  compassionate  for  her  own  good.  she  chooses  to  see  the  best  in  people,  even  if  it’s  not  always  there.  that  being  said,  they  aren’t  being  friendly  just  for  the  sake  of  being  friendly  and  whatever  sort  of  ‘  friendship  ‘  they  have  is  formed  for  the  sake  this  person’s  own  gain,  be  it  academically,  as  a  bit  of  romantic  payback,  or  even  because  they  feel  she  can  benefit  their  growth  in  the  society.  there’s  a  lot  of  room  for  creative  liberties  here  (  and  plenty  of  angst,  if  we  wanted  ),  but  i  think  it  would  do  her  some  good  to  face  the  truth  behind  typical  rose  -  colored  glasses,  even  if  she’s  completely  oblivious  to  it  for  now,  for  a  while  ?  forever  ?  perhaps  she  knows  but  will  simply  pretend  she  does  not  see  because  she’d  rather  live  in  the  illusion  than  face  the  truth.

aesthetics  :  smiles  that  do  not  quite  reach  the  eyes,  lies  veiled  beneath  honeyed  tones,  the  steady  rapping  of  raindrops  on  window  panes,  gifted  roses  already  on  the  verge  of  wilting,  bribes  offered  in  the  way  of  i  -  owe  -  you’s,  rain  check  texts  one  hour  after  a  read  message,  the  slip  of  smoke  through  outstretched  fingers,  large  sunglasses  shielding  disinterested  gaze,  company  offered  out  of  convenience  rather  than  genuine  desire,  the  dying  embers  of  a  flickering  flame.

(  ♫  +  ❤  )     —    two  people  that  dance  a  fine  line  together,  and  perhaps  they’ve  been  dancing  it  since  the  beginning  of  her  first  year  up  to  joining  the  society  (  or  maybe  they  still  are  ).  push  and  pull,  always  like  two  moths  to  a  flame,  this  connection  is  the  prime  example  of  what  could  be  if  life  wasn’t  in  the  way.  the  two  have  obvious  chemistry,  but  there’s  something  that’s  keeping  them  from  being  together  -  could  be  the  society,  their  parents  or  friends,  or  some  other  outside  influence.  physical  or  emotional  boundaries  aside,  they  are  the  epitome  of  the  right  place  at  the  wrong  time  and  perhaps  they’d  be  together  if  they  could  but  instead  they  fight  against  it,  flirting  the  line  of  you  could  be  mine  and  it’s  just  not  the  time.  perhaps  they’ve  already  put  it  behind  them,  but  they  both  just  have  that  knowledge  that  in  another  life.

aesthetics  :   fleeting  glances  shared  across  a  crowded  room,  grazing  fingertips  in  a  fleeting  touch,  the  lingering  tendrils  of  darkness  in  the  break  of  dawn,  the  way  the  moon  controls  the  tides,  harmless  invitations  for  coffee  that  grows  cold  in  conversation  lapses,  knowing  coffee  orders  like  the  back  of  your  hand,  shared  smiles  hidden  in  the  crooks  of  necks,  faded  photographs  of  a  simpler  time,  handwritten  notes  tucked  neatly  between  book  pages.

josephine  tends  to  her  friendships  like  a  neat  little  garden,  cares  so  wholly  for  each  of  them  in  their  own  special  way.  but  in  light  of  recent  events  (  and  moving  forward  amidst  a  still  missing  society  member  ),  it  only  makes  sense  for  a  couple  of  her  close  relationships  to  start  fraying  at  the  seams.  whether  they  consider  them  friends  is  neither  here  nor  there,  she’s  taken  to  applying  that  term  to  pretty  much  everyone  in  the  society,  truly.  their  friendship  is  well  on  its  way  to  dissolving,  or  at  least  a  very  close  breaking  point,  whether  it  be  because  of  the  stress  of  everything  going  on  (  or  went  on  or  will  go  on  ),  or  they  feel  that  she’s  somehow  betrayed  their  trust  in  some  way  (  could  be  trivial,  could  be  completely  valid  ),  or  perhaps  they’ve  come  to  learn  that  she’s  played  a  part  in  previous  disruptive  rule  breaking.

aesthetics  :  fraying  ends  of  a  friendship  bracelet,  the  bitter  taste  of  black  coffee,  dark  bags  under  tired  eyes  (  no,  they’re  not  prada  ),  the  ache  of  a  disappointed  gaze,  the  torn  pages  of  an  old  notebook,  waves  cresting  the  shore  to  simply  retreat  again,  empty  roads  at  4am,  a  table  for  two  but  party  of  one,  the  crinkling  static  of  a  tv  left  on  too  long,  four  missed  calls  and  a  ‘  we  need  to  talk  ‘  text,  curtains  drawn  in  once  familiar  windows.

the  two  had  dated  previously,  prior  to  either  of  them  joining  the  society.  whether  it  happened  during  her  teen  years,  the  lull  between  life  and  strathmore,  or  right  up  to  their  time  in  the  society  -  it’s  very  much  open  -  ended.  josephine  has  always  loved  too  deeply,  and  it  could  have  been  their  downfall  or  what  had  kept  them  together  as  long  as  they  were.  i  imagine  they  didn’t  end  on  the  best  of  terms,  but  she  still  cares  deeply  for  them  and  their  well  -  being,  regardless  of  where  they  stand  now,  and  perhaps  there’s  lingering  feelings  that  they  both  simply  deny.

someone  that  josephine  has  history  with;  either  they’ve  kissed  or  hooked  up  a  few  times,  or  just  went  on  a  couple  casual  dates  but  there  was  nothing  ever  really  there.  no  hard  feelings  at  all,  they  mutually  decided  there  was  nothing  between  them  and  they  were  better  off  as  actual  just  friends.  they’re  probably  pretty  close  because  of  the  fact  and  it’s  just  something  that  they  joke  about  now.

they  were  sleeping  together  out  of  convenience  at  some  point,  perhaps  they’d  turn  to  each  other  on  a  lonely  night  or  they’re  hanging  out  and  they  don’t  mean  for  it  to  happen,  but  they  end  up  tangled  together  in  one  of  their  rooms,  gone  in  the  early  hours  of  the  morning  before  the  other  ways.  or  perhaps  it  was  a  one  or  two  time  thing,  a  moment  of  weakness  or  split  decision  that  they  pretend  didn’t  happen.  truly  no  strings  attached,  neither  of  them  expecting  anything  from  the  other  because  it’s  not  supposed  to  mean  anything,  so  they’re  always  gone  by  morning,  before  anyone  can  see  them,  because  there’s  nothing  casual  about  deep  conversations  when  you’re  half  -  asleep,  bodies  pressed  together  and  hands  intertwined.

right  now,   jace  is  very  much  at  a  crossroads  in  his  instruction.   the  opal  society  really  hasn’t  lived  up  to  his  expectations  thus  far,   and  with  everything  that  has  transpired  with  his  circlet,   he’s  begun  to  take  inventory  of  his  life  and  question  whether  or  not  this  is  something  he   wants.   we  all  know  jace  doesn’t  need  strathmore,   or  any  university  for  that  matter.   he  has  money,   he  has  success,   his  career  is  very  much  set  in  stone.   though  he’s  compelled  by  everything  the  society  promises,   what  exactly  is  he  getting  out  of  this?   that’s  where  your  muse  comes  in.   i  would  love  for  him  to  confide  in  one  of  his  predecessors  and  for  them,   in  turn,   to  remind  him  why  he’s  here  and  all  he  has  to  gain  by  powering  through  instruction.   whether  it’s  simply  motivating  him  through  words  or  giving  him  a  taste  of  all  there  is  to  gain,   your  muse  could  be  the  one  to  change  his  mind  and  get  him  back  on  board.

on  the  flip  side  of  that  same  coin,   this  crisis  of  faith  could  be  an  excellent  opportunity  for  him  to  rebel.   being  the  goal-orientated,   tunnel  vision  type  that  he  is,   an  uninspired  jace  is  a  recipe  for  disaster.   and  while  typically  he’d  search  high  and  low  for  something,   anything,   to  rekindle  that  spark,   sometimes  he  just  really  wishes  he  could  let  go.   between  strathmore,   the  society,   and  all  he’s  taken  on  with  protecting  kevin,   i  doubt  it’ll  take  much  for  him  to  break   ---   we  just  need  someone  to  apply  a  little  pressure.   swindle  him  into  going  out  drinking,   convince  him  to  bail  on  conference  calls.   a  good  bad  influence  could  be  just  what  he  needs  to  dislodge  the  ever-present  stick  from  his  ass.   after  all,   rock  bottom  is  always  more  fun  with  a  friend.

wrong  place,   right  time   (   open  to  anyone   ) status   :   taken  by  gin  &  alejandra.

king  of  secret-keeping,   jace  has  this  wildly  inconvenient  habit  of  finding  people  at  their  most  vulnerable,   though  he’s  yet  to  be  caught  in  the  act  himself.   with  his  current  arc  seemingly  headed  that  way,   this  could  be  a  great  opportunity  for  someone  to  look  past  the  passive  facade  he  puts  up  and  see  him  for  who  he  truly  is.   i  plan  to  explore  his  anxiety  and  eventually  have  him  seek  help  through  a  counselor  in  future  self  paras,   but  before  that  happens,   i’d  love  for  someone  to  accidentally  stumble  upon  him  at  his  lowest,   and  for  him  to  have  to  cope  with  the  repercussions  of  that  interaction.   something  tells  me  he’ll  be  kicking  himself  for  allowing  himself  to  be  seen  in  that  light.

howdy,   partner   (   open  to  anyone   ) status   :   available.

the  absolute  comedy  of  knowing  that,   on  top  of  everything  else,   jace  still  has  an  entire  company  to  run.   part  of  the  reason  he  chose  to  uproot  his  life  is  the  pressure  he’s  been  under  to  come  up  with  the  next  big  thing,   and  with  so  many  of  his  fellow  society  members  coming  from  influential  families  or  being  gifted  in  their  own  ways,   i’d  love  to  cook  up  sort  of  dream  team  situation.   jace  misses  being  excited  about  his  work,   craves  the  challenge  of  building  something  from  the  ground  up,   and  working  on  this  project  with  your  muse  has  given  him  a  new  lease  on  life.   though  their  relationship  begins  as  strictly  professional,   i  think  it’d  be  very  fun  and  wholesome  if,   between  coffee  dates  and  late  night  strategy  sessions,   the  dynamic  evolves  into  a  full-fledged  friendship.

while  i  have  a  few  things  plotted  out  from  that  time,   jace’s  first  year  at  strathmore  is  still  very  much  a  mystery  to  me,   and  i’d  love  to  add  some  layers  to  his  current  dynamics  by  further  discussing  their  origins.   let’s  talk  first  impressions.   did  jace  rub  your  muse  the  wrong  way,   and  has  their  impression  improved  or  worsened  with  time?   what  about  the  opposite?   maybe  he  and  your  muse  got  along  at  first  but  fell  out  for  some  odd  reason,   and  now  they’re  both  in  the  society  and  unable  to  avoid  each  other  any  longer.   jace’s  romantic  history  leaves  much  to  be  desired   ---   perhaps  there  were  a  few  one  night  stands,   or  a  couple  of  dates  gone  right  or  wrong.   a  lot  could  have  happened  in  those  two  terms,   and  i’d  die  for  a  clearer  picture  of  what  jace’s  first  year  looked  like!
