Free Technology For Teachers: Yale Open Courses
Last week I explored MIT's Open Courses. This week I'm exploring Yale's Open Courses. The number of open courses that Yale offers is not as large as MIT's, but Yale's Open Course offerings are deeper. The courses Yale offers include video and audio files of the lectures from each class as well as the transcripts from each class. Like MIT's open courses, not all of the readings are available for free so you'll have to check Amazon or your local bookstore for the readings.

Open Shame
Open Shame
Shame is a powerful cloak in academia.
We are very used to thinking about shame in terms of what is called the ‘imposter syndrome’: that nagging feeling that our achievements are frauds just waiting to be found out. Article rejections, poor PhD supervisor advice—my personal favourite being ‘you are not a bad philosopher for a girl’—and less than 100% student satisfaction gall and hurt, but more than anything, they seem to confirm our suspicions that we just shouldn’t be here.
But our patterns of shame are more than individual. The fact that many academics feel like imposters indicates that group dynamics and a culture of shame need to be understood as much as individual motivations.
That shame can be shared means that it can shape and impact activities at both the level of a single university, and even a whole sector. That means that it can have an impact both on the business of higher education as well as the level of individual productivity.
If you want to behold the power of shame, think no further than our long, mostly unsuccessful attempts to take our educational and research achievements out from behind both our and others’ fire- and paywalls.
Our wrangle with openness rivals the circumscribed life of Murukami’s colourless Tsukuru Tazaki. Lost, confused, embarrassed, we can’t remember the misstep that landed us all in the position of being the indentured peer review labourers of for profit journal companies. It only seems recently that our hero librarians plucked up the courage to ask why this should be the case, and their stance has motivated some gestures towards openness by the heads of research councils. This is a battle we might win if we have the will to do so.
The bonds that tie us to closed patterns of education and proprietorial textbooks are just as tight, but the fight to loosen them seems to have gained less traction. The problem is that those bonds, I believe, are largely of our own making. We are the source of our own shame.
Feelings have run high every time I have initiated discussions on open educational resources at my University. Intellectual property isn’t the issue: three years ago we changed our policy to indicate that staff retain IP on educational resources. And it isn’t as if we are seeking first mover advantage on this: MIT started publishing open courseware in the 1990s. They have been putting their work out there longer than most of our undergraduates have been alive. It hasn’t hurt them at all: their student demand and research reputation have gone from strength to strength. Nor is the story without corporate giants: it is heartening to see some US universities moving towards the open provision of the books that students might normally have to pay hundreds of dollars for.
If this were a discussion on access to affordable medical treatment, there would be public outrage. Instead, there is silence. So what is our problem with open access education?
Shame provides a key part of the explanation. Some of that shame arises when a staff member decides to prioritise the development of educational materials over research outputs. This is the valley of myth, where it is assumed that any time spent on education comes at the cost of research, and thus promotion. This myth is not global. An easy riposte to this is to note that US universities—indeed the world’s best universities by research ranking—are the ones that have led the push for open educational resources over the last two decades. Yes, it is true that they only accept one in every 16 to 36 student applicants and that open access helps people who miss out to again access. But even with our domestic demand driven system, people still miss out, and importantly, they do not always have access to the university of their choice, or a university outside of their local area or country.
But there is more to this shame, captured in a phrase I have heard repeatedly over the years: ‘I can’t put work out there that isn’t finished, or that I am not proud of’. This begs the question, of course, about why that material would be good enough for on campus use in the first place, and it ignores the possibility that those students are able to capture and distribute that material via various digital media already. Students have been distributing class notes for hundreds of years. Hegel’s Lectures on the Philosophy of World History, for example, owe their existence partly to student notes.
Regardless of the exact meaning of these phrases, it is clear that open educational access is not going to happen without help and support for academics. Open educational access is not a switch that can be flicked on to illuminate curriculum. A push for public helps to sharpen effort—compare the very sophisticated curriculum and assessment statements of the secondary and primary sectors—but we also have to help people get there. At this stage, there seem to be no national heroes in this story who are encouraging us to move, only local ones.
In making the case for heroes and a push to the open, it is easy to fall into motherhood statements about world equality and mobility. The most recent report of the American Council on Education shows that despite a twenty-year record of open education, most students enrol at a University within fifty miles of home. Access to information is not enough to help disadvantaged students to access the best universities or best programs. Twenty years of statistics gathering by MIT on their open education initiative also show that domestic users are close to equalling international users, with the majority of those users being teachers who want to improve their knowledge; students who want to enhance or complement their current studies; and self learners who want to explore new ideas.
What we therefore need to bear in mind is the national opportunity cost of primary and secondary teachers either having or not having access to professional resources on demand. We could also cite the obligation we have to taxpayers to communicate the benefits of their support for education. But at the end of the day, the opportunities provided to even small numbers of students in disadvantaged educational settings either directly or via their better-read teachers are less of a cost to society than the consequences of people not accessing education or of dropping out.
This is why I am grateful that ANU press got behind the initiative of open education texts two years ago. We are also MOOC makers, but producing materials for them has highlighted how little is in the open, affordable domain for students around the world. Teach to the world and you realise how access to education can be just as challenging and expensive as assess to health care.
We are three texts in and learning a lot about the formats you might think about when you are liberated from the bounds of the printed page. You can integrate visuals, sounds and assessment without locking texts up behind proprietorial keys. You also learn the salutary lesson that you have to build people up to longer texts through the publication of shorter forms. In short, it is helping us to rethink the stuffed, static and unkempt pages of our learning management system. It also makes me wonder whether any Australian university would have the audacity to follow Caltech in asking all students to publish a paper in an open platform before they graduate. Education is now part of a publishing platform that is approaching 900,000 downloads from across the globe. MIT open courseware it ain’t but I am still proud of this first step towards us shaking off the shame of closed education.
The Open Syllabus Project (OSP) is pleased to make the beta version of our Syllabus Explorer publicly available. The Explorer leverages a collection of over 1 million syllabi collected from university and departmental websites.
This is cool to see happening (open sharing in the academic fields).
