Did you ever see the Tomb Raider Gameboy Advance Homebrew demo?
I never played it, but I watched a couple videos of it. It's genuinely insane! The Gameboy Advance has no 3D acceleration to speak of at all. The game is strictly running in software mode.
I remember hearing that one of the GBA CPUs is very similar to some British microcomputer, which had an active and thriving homebrew scene when the GBA launched. Which meant a lot of the demoscene and homebrew people from that could move over to the GBA with relative ease, which is why we ended up getting so many games pushing advanced effects like polygons.
But it's genuinely crazy to consider that you could squeeze enough out of that little guy to where it could run the original Tomb Raider at a not-so-bad framerate.
