Mulan was born and raised just outside of San Francisco in a large, comfortable home the family could afford due to her father’s work as an auror and her mother’s ownership of a chain of spas in the state. She grew up with very particular expectations, which she yearned to fulfill while simultaneously wanting to avoid. She was never really a very girly girl, but she was an excellent student, and she was very brave. She grew up mostly in peace with the love of her mother, father, and grandmother.
Things changed for her very violently, and very suddenly, when her father was attacked by a group of witch hunters. In the past, witch hunters were never really a problem, more of an inconvenience; but these ones had been good, too good. Her father was nearly killed and spent a month in intensive care at a local magical hospital. Having nearly lost her father, she knew she had to do something, but all MACUSA wanted to do was run away from the problem. Their answer was to hide and be more secretive.
Without much of a plan, Mulan decided to do something a little nuts: disguise herself as a No-Maj, try and infiltrate a witch hunter group to figure out exactly how they managed to hurt her dad, and how to stop them if it ever happened again. It was hard, but she was eventually accepted into the Adamsville witch hunters. Every day her limits are tested by the hunters, her homework at No-Maj highschool, and her homework at Ilvermorny. She is consistently absent at both schools and her good grades have been slipping. She knows it isn’t realistic to keep the charade up and go to both schools, but her dad’s life ins on the line.
