IMHO complaining about an opera plot being "absurd" is like complaining about fantasy having dragons.*Not all fantasy has dragons, but if you are in denial about them being a normal part of the fantasy genre, then maybe you just don't enjoy the genre. The over-the-top drama is part of the experience.
Why are you expecting a setting where everyone communicates through dramatic songs to be realistic? To quote Mad Margaret from Ruddigore" they sing choruses in public".┐( ∵ )┌
(* actually yeah this is exactly the same annoyance that I have with certain people going "Boohoo Tolkien wasn't *realistic* what a bad writer he was. " HE WASN'T TRYING TO BE.There are other forms of mimesis. Some of us can relate to things outside our everyday experience.)
