Wednesday, August 19: Therion, “Cults of the Shadow”

Therion was still more death metal than opera on Theli, though the latter was well on its way to overtaking the former.  But before that happened, “Cults of the Shadow” galloped hard over Christofer Johnsson’s grunts, and had the icy and forbidding production values common to most late ‘90s Nuclear Blast releases. Still, a shift was definitely happening, from the opening keyboard flourishes to the choirs in the middle, as Johnsson’s larger vision was coming into focus. Nonetheless, “Cults of the Shadow” was unmistakably a metal tune, whereas subsequent albums would blur the line to the point where Therion ultimately became more of an opera unit with occasional metal flourishes.
