Transcript of Operation Big Buzz
Operation Big Buzz What is Operation Big Buzz? This operation of entomological warfare was performed by the US military in 1955. The operation consisted of dropping 330,000 mosquitoes infected with yellow fever over the state of Georgia. Operation Big Buzz This experiment explored the possibility of using mosquitoes as a biological weapon. They tested the storing, transportation
, and dispersion of the mosquitoes by dropping them on the innocent human beings of Georgia by airplane in E14 bombs. Operation Big Buzz The mosquitoes were said to be infected with yellow fever and that the US government was just using its own citizens as guinea pigs to test the warfare. What was it really? The US Government did in fact test the possibility of using mosquitoes as entomological weapons of war during the 1950's. They were only experimenting to see if it was a possibility. hmmmmmm A large amount of mosquitoes were actually dropped on Georgia as part of the experimental process. Their dispersal patterns were tracked and they were tested to see where the wind would carry them if dropped. Why was it believed? This conspiracy theory was widely believed because people were gullible during this time period. This came not too long after the end of World War II as well as the start of the Red Scare, or fear of communism. It was easily believed that anything was possible due to the events that had already transpired. the real deal The mosquitoes dropped weren't actually infected with yellow fever. You're WRONG Operation Big Buzz can be disproved because large amounts of Georgia's population did NOT become infected with yellow fever during this time period. You're still wrong The testing of the actual biting habits was performed on willing participants in order to record the condition in which mosquitoes bite the best. Results Studies during this time showed that the mosquitoes succeeded in feasting on the blood of many humans in the drop areas. Results The ending result is that "yellow fever" mosquitoes were indeed
, not infected. The government tests proved that mosquitoes definitely had the ability to do the job of delivering yellow fever in a time of war. Perry willing participant for your viewing
