What NAFTA Foretells For New Proposed Trade Deal
What NAFTA Foretells For New Proposed Trade Deal
In the twenty years since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect, millions of Mexicans have been pushed by NAFTA to make the dangerous journey across the border into the United States, many without legal authorization. The U.S. government has responded by turning the border into a militarized zone, jailing hundreds of thousands of people, giving them free education,…

the inclusion of the berlin wall (and even the whole east/west german border) in that post is some real disingenuous shit because like, after operation gatekeeper began in 1994 - you know, the operation that militarized the border and that began arming us border patrol agents as if they were actual fucking military, zealously targeted people crossing the border, and set up those now-infamous detention centers - it literally only took seven fucking years, or as early as 2001, for the death toll in the us-mexican border to surpass the death toll from the east/west german border's entire 25+ year span.
and like, we never stop hearing about the berlin wall or the iron curtain, and how horrible and inhumane it was - never mind the fact that it was set up in a period of an intense political stand off between the united states and the soviet union, the likes of which has never existed between the united states and mexico - you know, something that could provide at least some sort of justification. and yet, despite being deadlier, larger and currently ongoing, the us-mexican border is never discussed in the same context of human suffering, mexican and latinx deaths on the border are not afforded the same humanity that european deaths along the iron curtain were and that is fucking bullshit

Twenty years ago, the United States enacted two programs nearly simultaneously that completely changed the every day life of many individuals: NAFTA and Operation Gatekeeper. The former lead to massive migration patterns that economically coerced people to move north and the latter was a large step in the militarization of the US-Mexico border. Current immigration debates are limited in scope, as they attempt to solve “the immigration problem” by merely allowing people in and completely ignoring the root reasons of migration.
