Resurface
Some years back, at BlueMind 3, a group of neuroscientists, oceanographers, artists, film makers, educators, poets, outdoor professionals and other blue-minded thinkers gathered to consider the science behind the question, “Why do we love water?” In this new short film (out Sept. 1 on Netflix) you'll learn more about Operation Surf--a therapy program helping wounded active-duty veterans by exposing them to the healing power of the ocean through adaptive surfing. This will move you. Thank you, Wallace J Nichols and #BlueMind!

Veterans Day Is Tomorrow, Folks...
-K.A.
A lot has been said the past few days about our country in the wake of this Presidential election. We have entered a time where our country is as divided as ever, torn between idyllic political mindsets, moral codes and values. Thing is? Division isn't what made this country great in the first place. Honor, Sacrifice and a True Love for Land, Country & the flag and concept of the United States of America did. On the eve of Veterans Day, we should make a concerted effort to remember that.
Operation Surf started a handful of years ago in Santa Cruz, California as a method of giving back to veterans that had sacrificed so much for our country in the pursuit of safety, patriotism and the defense of our rights to vote, pursue liberty and ...hell, even disagree with political candidates. These men and women often lost limbs, endured Traumatic Brain Injury and have endured PTSD that has made life difficult for these veterans and patriots.
Through Operation Surf, veterans have been able to congregate within a loving and supportive environment where they are encouraged, supported and given the support systems to help heal as well as become exposed to the sense of healing that the ocean and adaptive surfing could bring. By adapting surfing lessons taught by world-class instructors, veterans are able to work through their limitations and achieve a goal many think difficult at the beginning of the week-long excursion and overcome those limitations connected to their physical and psychological disabilities.
Beyond the excursions, Operation Surf enlists the help of psychologists and mental health professionals to create a network of mentorship, as well as 1-on-1 discussion and group counseling that allows veterans to combat their limitations as valiantly as they did during their time of service. I don't try to get preachy on this thing, because...that's really not my style, but in lieu of it being Veterans Day, especially THIS Veterans Day? Donate. Give. Look past the tension and the turmoil and remember what truly made this country great in the first place:
A sense of community, a sense of pride, a sense of honor, and sacrifice to instill and uphold the values that our forefathers carved out and etched into parcel centuries ago.
