1) the character everyone gets wrong

#haha well dean is a world-class example of widespread character misinterpretation and I am equally if not more passionate about the myriad ways fandom misinterprets sam, but one comes from the other, so I have to go with dean first and foremost. I am nervous to read other people’s portrayals of him 100% of the time, not exaggerating.

9) worst part of canon

the “worst parts” that most people would name are my favorite parts :) the only component that I struggle to embrace with either the “I can fix that” or the “it’s an essential ingredient” of the heavily invested fic writer is the stuff that definitely wouldn’t have made it in without the fans because it is ill-suited to the larger narrative. so uh the D/C crumbs and the sam/gabriel crumbs of the late seasons - does nothing for me at best, pisses me off at worst. if I wanted fuckass yaoi fodder I’d write it myself lol

13) worst blorboficiation

Hi! Can I ask your favorite character thinks about Sam, Dean and John? I love reading your character thinks they are one of the rare thinks make spn fandom stayable. Oh also did you also noticed people always ignores Sam and Meg's tension when talking about love intrests? It always looked weird to me because even thought they didn't really get something they clearly had atleast that friends think. I’m going to take your first question as what are my favorite traits of each of the winchester boys (using “boys” loosely lol) in which case:

sam: perpetually straddling the line between powerful and powerless (both hunter and hunted, both “good” and “evil,” perpetually a Boy and insufficiently a Man, “monster” whom we aren’t meant to permanently view as a monster because that label is reserved for our dehumanized foes, supposedly/fleetingly in possession of almost the same vaguely defined Innocence that “good girls” like jo embody - because that was sam’s childhood role in concert with dean’s childhood role as Protector, never mind that the former role is every bit as demeaning and restrictive as the latter role was originally unfair.) also I love that he loves books and that he argued passionately with john <3 my debate queen.

dean: HIS TEMPER!!!!!! the way it fills the whole room!!!! I have yet to meet a character capable of viscerally affecting me with his anger like dean can. I love that he is obviously someone who is deeply deeply hurt and that his feelings are totally unavoidable to everyone but himself and that his ideas about family are comically fucked and that, of course, he swallowed his father’s ghost with such desperate enthusiasm and ballooned from there into my favorite fictional patriarch of all time. I love that the world beyond the borders of his limited imagination barely exists. not completely unlike the normies I’m also very fond of how much he eats and of his little patchwork colloquialisms that bewilder people when they stop to listen to the actual words coming out of his mouth. and! his unchecked misogyny lmfao. I have a lot of fun with that, believe it or not.

john: your neglectful father as a miserable apparition fading in and out of your childhood memories 💕 simultaneously an angry drunk and a tyrannical drill sergeant AND the first person you wanted to see walk through the door when you were scared and alone, the person who could make your entire week by deigning to offer you a kind word for once 💕 wearing my t-shirt that says “I love abusive dads” on it rn because I can’t get enough of this guy or the worse guy he raised to take his place. also I love that he doodles while he thinks and that he leaves little pieces of himself behind in the places he’s been for samndean to hungrily trail after.

re: sam and meg - I personally like that they weren’t given the Traditional Romance treatment bc that way I especially get to do whatever I want with them creatively; kind of like how I’m glad sam and rowena never kissed or hooked up in canon. but yes sam/meg is one of my favorite rare pairs and is inextricable from Sam And Jo in my head. BUABS has its hooks in me forever. my tag for the former is “botched exorcism” and my tag for the latter is “pupal stage” 🤓

Proper Meta is beyond me currently but see my john and sam tag #redundant lightkeeper. and in combination with that my john & sam & dean tag #funerary boat. and in combination with that my john & mary & sam & dean tag #staircase to nowhere (there isn’t much in this one lol it’s newer) AND in combination with that my john and dean tag #swallowing the torch.

mostly it bothers me that fandom either totally ignores them to solely focus on john and dean (whom I love just as much for different reasons but cannot touch a single shred of the fandom content for bc it makes me ermmm Violently Angry. wish I was exaggerating) OR is under the foolish misconception that what they felt for each other was flat-out hatred. as if any familial relationship is that simple.

What do you think about Alex? Also I feel like both Jody and Mama(I don't remember her actual name sorry) are somewhat like John.

I really like alex she is my gorl. the more-like-sam character to claire’s more-like-dean. which explains her comparative lack of screentime 😄

anyway her intro episode is one of my favorite episodes in all of s9 - highly slept on as far as Actually Good mid-late seasons episodes go.

I think it’s interesting that she stayed Mostly out of hunting even while living under jody’s roof (with the exception of the occasional bit of research/nurse assist) after directly stating her desire to do so in s11. again I wish we could’ve seen sam have a conversation with her about that like the conversations he had with claire, but different, because he wouldn’t have anything to talk her out of. it’d be bittersweet for him. no matter because I can simply write it better than like robbie thompson would have <3

and yes…..jody vs alex’s mama was an interesting dynamic to me in ways the show didn’t quite intend. like it was positioning jody as the superior maternal figure because she wasn’t trying to “force her to be like you the second she becomes inconvenient” - but again this framing assumes that the act of turning alex into a vampire is innately bad because monsters are innately bad. in mama’s mind it was a compassionate act; ridding alex of her cognitive dissonance and in the process sacrificing her family’s “lure” and emergency blood supply of 8 years, because keeping alex with the family was her priority. obviously you can/should read it as a selfish act as well…. in that jody is operating selfishly and is being overtly compared to mama because they are both “using” alex to fill the same “hole”; jody demanding that sam and dean make Hunter Exceptions for alex that they ostensibly wouldn’t be making if jody hadn’t gotten attached to her, and that would have been overturned if jody had let mama turn alex, or if alex hadn’t decided to kill mama to save jody (which is what ultimately proves her Goodness regardless of the events leading up to this moment.)

to be clear I didn’t like the part where it turns out mama had a Real Daughter prior to alex whom she replaced her with, because A) it is cliched, and B) alex and mama’s human/monster relationship is much more interesting to me without this factor. like my reaction to this “reveal” by jody was very much “oh 🙄” - if we were going to do a “you’re just like me” between widow cop jody and this vampire matriarch helicopter-parenting a kidnapped human daughter I think it could’ve been executed with a lot more finesse. but this is of course cw supernatural, where the answer to every inelegantly posed question is “monsters bad, humans good.”

TL;DR jody vs john as heads of household very interesting to me yes. I will try to play with it a bit in the claire fic :) I’ve been meaning to come up with a tag for jody’s home for wayward girls to go with “funerary boat” which is my tag for the john and sam and dean household. I will get to it eventually!
