Lily dances like she's trying to sprout wings. Lily dances like her life depends on it, like she needs it to breathe, but by the end of it, when he finally looses sight of her in the crowd, she'll pop up behind him, red hair sticking to her forehead with sweat and too short shorts riding up enough to make him bite his tongue. She'll go back to Lils in a flash, a sly grin on her face as she pokes him in the ribs and asks for a drink- and what can he do but say yes?

He's known for a while her 17th birthday was going to be an ordeal. She likes things in excess and always has, even when she was just a little girl with a smirk and a too-big dress that she ripped off at the knees so she could wade through the river. He'd never considered what he'd be like when she came of age, though, so tonight in the club is- well, it's even worse than he could have anticipated.

But he tries to tell himself that things could definitely be worse as he watches her, arms covered with muggle glitter and smile brighter than the sun.

Things could also be better.

Teddy shouldn't be here. He knows it, and she knows it, too, but he thinks that she's maybe still angry at him for being gone on her last birthday. She's likely trying to get revenge, as is her way, and he really doesn't blame her- he's willing to do anything to get back in her good graces. It had been dumb to run away from everything, but her birthday had been coming up, and- 15 year old Lily was someone he could handle. 15 year old Lily was still feral and snarling; 15 year old Lily was still a child in his eyes, and he could ignore how he felt for her for the time being.

He's always been a coward, after all. It's possible he always will be.

It took him a year of traveling the world with his job before he could get himself back in line- forget how soft her skin was, no longer be able to recall the precise color of her freckles, stop thinking about her smile every time he saw the moon. Then he had returned, the fallen warrior, the prodigal son, only to discover that in his absence the girl he loved had become lethal.

By the end of the night he's ready to go home and punch a wall, maybe, but Lily's still having a good time. She is, however, drunk enough for him to convince to leave the club, and when he picks her up, she doesn't hit him, just wraps her arms around his neck. He can't hold in his sigh.

They're on the way to an apparition point when she snuggles her head into his shoulder even more. He begins to glare at nothing in particular.

"Teddy," she whispers, her voice slurring slightly. "Don't take me home."

He stops walking, patience long gone. “We're not going to another bar, Lily, it's 3 in the morning.”

She lifts a hand to hit him lightly on the chest. "Not that, idiot. I know when I'm drunk enough to stop. Mum and Dad just prolly shouldn't-" she hiccups- "see me this hammered."

He lets out a breath he known he was holding. “Yeah, of course," he says. This is understandable, but sort of inconvenient. Her brothers live much farther away than her parents do. "I'll take to James' apartment for the night."

She raises her head, and all of the sudden they're face to face, so close he can see every freckle he tried so hard to forget. She's scowling like he's said something wrong.

"Just take me to your flat, dumbass," she mumbles. "It's in walking distance, Ted. Honestly, how do you tie your own shoelaces?"

This night is going to be much longer than he had planned. Laying on his couch with Lily in the next room wearing his pajamas in his bed-

There's no way Teddy Lupin's getting any sleep till sunrise.

        I TOOK PANSY OFF SO I COULD PUT HARLEY ON BUT U ARE CLOSE also my favorite clone is so hard to figure out bc i never talk about her but shes a strange choice for me if thats a hint
