"You never loved me." // "Did I ever matter?" // "I saw you! I saw you with her!" // "You can't just leave me like this.."
"You never loved me."
The young prince couldn’t believe the words that were flooding the chambers of his ears; the boy that he cared so deeply for denying what it was Emmett knew he felt. He knew it was wrong; he knew it was forbidden, but he couldn’t go on any longer living only to please. Emmett had lived by the rules for far too long; the boy living for his subjects and his father and not himself. Reality was; Emmett hadn’t been happy for quite some time now, the boy only feeling a feigned sense of serenity whenever he was within close proximity with the other male.
With his breath hitching in the back of his throat; Emmett dared to take a step forward for he knew he had to prove to the other boy just how much he needed him. “After everything we’ve been through; after all the sacrifices I’ve made for you.” He murmured; the young prince dropping his gaze to the floor. How could Luca be so blind to what was so obviously starring him in the eye? Emmett had never been so open with someone before; never before had he allowed someone to see him in such a venerable light. With Luca he could just be; with Luca he no longer had to play pretend.
With his hands shaking slightly in anticipation; Emmett closed the distance between them as he pressed his lips to Lucas’. He could feel the other boy tense up at the contact; Emmett momentarily forgetting how to breathe. Pulling back sharply; Emmett wrung his hands together as he took several step backwards. “I don’t want you to be right; I don’t us to be doomed.” He continued; the boy turning on his heels. “Or maybe you should be right; maybe I should just forget what it is I feel. I should marry Annabelle and have a family like what is expected of me.” Sighing quietly; the boy moved forwards leaving Luca behind. “But at least I got to kiss you one last time.” He whispered to himself; his fingers gingerly brushing against his lips where the feel of Lucas’ still lingered.
He was dressed formally; the young prince sitting on the edge of his bed as he waited for one of his servants to come and fetch him for the wedding ceremony. Playing with the threads of his shirt; never before had his heart felt so heavy. After today he would be bound to a woman he would never love; after today he would have to forget the one that owned his heart. Their time together had been brief, but Emmett knew all along that it could never last. He had been given one brief taste of freedom; of what it meant to be happy, but now it was all being taken away from him in an instance. Yet this was a price he had no choice but to pay.
His eyes snapped up from their position on the floor when he heard his bedroom door opening; his breath hitching at the back of his throat at the sight of the man walking into the room. For a long while; Emmett was silent, Luca being the first to speak. Looking away shamefully; he thought Luca understood his obligations. Luca knew that with royal blood flowing through his veins; his loyalty had to rest with his people and his nation, not to his own heart.
“You think that this is what I wanted?” He whispered; the boy not daring to move. He could hear the soft drone of music coming from the floor below; signalling that the ceremony would be starting any moment. Glancing down at his trembling fingers; soon he would belong to the one woman that expected the world from him. He would never give her the world; not when she wasn’t the one that deserved it. Straightening out his frame; Emmett walked past the other male to linger in the doorway. “From this point forward what we share is strictly professional. You are my guardsman and I am your prince and one day I’ll be your king.” Breathing in sharply; Emmett was painfully aware he would regret not speaking of Luca’s value to him one last time. “But that does not mean you never mattered to me.”
”I saw you! I saw you with her!”
He had been caught up in the moment; the young prince having had one too many glasses of wine bubbling through his system when she had burst into his chambers. She had told him that she didn’t want to wait till their wedding night; that she wanted to start working on their family now. Although Emmett hadn’t given her consent to have her way with him; he hadn’t protested against her touch either. He thought if he could spend one night with a woman then he could work the need for Luca out of his system. It hadn’t worked however; Emmett waking with his clothes torn from his body and an aching emptiness residing at his core.
He thought he could keep the evening spent with Annabelle to himself; that he could continue on with his days as if nothing had changed, but it seemed that the fates had something else in store for him. Luca had been avoiding him for days and it was only when the young man approached him would he discover why. It had turned out that Luca had sought out his attention in the middle of the evening, only to discover him to be preoccupied with the young woman they both held a certain taste of disdain for. The young prince was embarrassed, his cheeks flooding with color as he cast his gaze towards the stone flooring beneath his polished boots. He should have been more careful with his affairs. They shouldn’t have even taken place in the first place.
Biting his lower lip, Emmett forced himself to meet the other boy’s gaze, his eyes swimming with the remorse he couldn’t even begin to explain. “It didn’t happen the way you think.” He replied cautiously, Emmett testing the strength of his tone before he continued. “I had had some wine, she came in all flustered and.” Fading off the end of his sentence, he looked away again with the shame he felt being radiated from his body. “You never should have had to find out that way.”
"You can’t just leave me like this…”
They were in the stables, the one place they found they could be together without having to be cautious about who may be watching. That was where they were now, but today was different, today Emmett was dressed in glimmering armour and the sword he had never used being tucked neatly away in its sheath. Emmett had forbidden Luca from being on the front lines, but as the nearly crowned king, he had an obligation to fight alongside his men. It was the evening previous that they had been together, where they had rid themselves of everything they hid behind and simply were together. What had transpired between the pair was thought to be sinful, but Emmett knew he couldn’t say goodbye without knowing he hadn’t given Luca all he had to offer.
Taking a timid step back from the much taller male, Emmett cleared his throat before he could manage a spoken word. “You know that I don’t have a choice in the matter. This is what is required of me, with my father dead and with me being coroneted; this is who I must be now. I’m their king and this is what my father would have expected of me.” The words sounded rehearsed and they almost felt that way.
Hesitating for a moment’s time, Emmett outstretched pale fingers till they were resting upon the cheek of the other boy. He had to reach upwards to reach him, but something about feeling so small made him feel safe in a sense. And safe would not be what he would be experiencing over the next several days. “I’ll be back in a couple of weeks, till then I need you to tend to affairs here. I promise I’ll be back. It isn’t leaving if I don’t say goodbye.” Reaching up to chastely press his lips to the other boys’, Emmett scurried from the building before he could be delayed any further. There was a war that was to be fought, blood that was to be shed. And he would be there. Standing in the middle of it all.
