Year 7 Class 1 has released the MV teaser for an acoustic version of “Oppa Virus” which I’m presuming is the title track of their upcoming album “With Spring” which is scheduled to be released on May 10th.
I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, the ultimate Oppa song. This debut song belongs to Seventh Grade Class One, aka 7-1. These 7 delightful young girls have lovely soprano voices set to a song that is, at first, repelling, and then addictive. The first time you hear it you will think "Oh, Lord, no... what an annoying song!" And fifteen minutes later you will be humming "lalalalaa oppa, lalalalala oppa, lalalala- DAMMIT." Obviously this group has a master composer. Even though the song has a bit of a Christmas undertone to it, it's very bright and cheerful despite it's lonely lyrics of "why don't you call or text me oppa?!" and is guaranteed to make you dance around a little.
The video introduces the seven ladies by name as you open the "Dareun Byeol High School" year book, in which their pictures and names are set. After that, the concept is that of frustrated, attention-lacking schoolgirls and cheerleaders who seem to like waving their pompom's in oppa's face a lot. While this is by no means a new concept it's very well executed and very cute to boot. I'm only slightly put off by the so-called "oppas" that these adorable 13-year-olds want attention from, who range from a handsome-looking soldier to a rather flustered old chemistry professor. I know at 13 girls like to think of older men, but there's a time and place...
As for the choreography, a cheerleading choreo isn't something we've never seen before, but due to the vivaciousness with which it is executed it comes across as very youthful and springy, not to mention clean and fresh. You shake those pompoms, girls!
While this particular concept works very well for these girls - absolutely adorable and very youthful - I can't feel that it's "old" or "cliche" or "already done before" - simply because I haven't seen a cheerleading concept that I liked since Girl's Generation's "Oh!" in 2009. Combined with the schoolgirl concept and the sighs of longing for a text from their oppas, I feel this concept has had new life blown into it.
To put it simply, this song can and will get stuck in your head. You will dance around the supermarket singing the word "oppa" repetitiously, and you will enjoy it.
