Shifting was one of the first lessons she’d learned as a young witch. There was a time, she was told, where witches like her didn’t have to be taught to take the form of their guardian spirit, but that being separated from the earth changed that. None of it made any sense to her, and it certainly didn’t make any sense that right after they taught her how to do it, they told her that she wasn’t allowed to do it. It was certainly complicating things now. Shifting on Earth was a completely different experience. So many feelings and emotions came with it. And it wasn’t easy to control.
Beck let out a sigh; closing her eyes and concentrating on her human form. The transformation was surprisingly painless and nearly instantaneous. One minute she was a fox, a second later she was a young woman again, adjusting the enchanted clothes that reappeared on her body as she turned back. The crack of a twig got her attention, and Beck’s head snapped up. Her heart could have stopped. Not twenty feet away, one of the others stood staring at her.
“Please don’t freak out!” She begged, loudly; clearly freaking out herself.
