wdfmuseum -- History comes in many shapes and sizes. On this day in 1960, Ub Iwerks was recognized with an Academy Award©️ for Technical Achievement for his innovative work on the optical printer, one of which is on display in the museum.
OPTICAL PRINTER
“A 35 mm optical printer with two projector heads, used in producing movie special effects. Starting from the left, you can see light shining from the lamp house, then at A is the first projector's film gate, at B a lens that projects the film in A onto the second projector's gate C. At D is the lens of the camera, the camera's finder is at E and the adjustable shutter control at F. The heavy base G contains all the electronics needed for controlling the printer.”

Interesting white paper on the optical printer's history, if a little aggressively academic in its wording. To wit:
This paper looks at the notion of the optical printer, its history, and its use in artists’ film and video, and in film archival practice as a philosophical apparatus. Te basis for this enquiry relates to a wider project concerned with radical interpretations and strategies of moving-image archival practice. Using the lens of materialist media theories — in the first instance, the concept of ‘discourse networks’ — the paper speculates on theories of understanding in order to explore the production of the image itself and how it is ‘received’.
What is it? The Anderson optical printer and the reflection of a trooper. I've walked by this spot thousands of times and today, for some reason, this composition just caught my eye.
