You and Minimcgayness (my two favorite skins blogs ever) watched what's that called--SLiDE. YEAH, THAT ONE. I thought it seemed like a rip-off because of the trailers being so similar to the skins trailers, but I might actually give it a shot if you both like it. Yes, your opinions are that important to me. o u o
Wow, thank you!! :D
As for Slide, you should. I highly recommend it. :)
And yeah, the trailer was a blatant rip off of S5/MTV Skins -- but don't let that fool you. It isn't Skins. There's a smaller group, leading to a more balanced narrative, and the characters are immediately more empathetic (imo anyway) than Skins kids. (And everyone knows how much I love Gen1 but even they didn't have the same connectedness right off the bat. I like all the Slide characters already, even Ed who I feared would be as insufferable to me as Sid, but he's not.) I was actually very hesitant about it too, so I understand everyone's reluctance. I thought it looked like it had good potential, but then I thought MTV Skins did too, once upon a time. Slide however, followed through quite well.
I think it's a little unfortunate in a way that Slide is getting compared to Skins constantly just cos they're both shows about teenagers living teenage lives. Slide is its own beast in its own right and while there are similarities, they are telling different stories with different kids in different places. Yeah, you have the stereotypes (poor little rich girl, fit popular dude, shy awkward virgin, witty adorable sidekick, rebellious punk) -- but Slide warps them a little. I don't want to give anything away but I was pleasantly surprised actually with the way these identities were ultimately developed (or touched on, I should say since I've only seen one episode). It's not perfect, and there are contrivances still -- but it is a pilot. Overall though, it shows a lot more promise than I would have thought.
I personally think of Slide as everything MTV Skins should have been, but wasn't (high production value, decent acting & writing, original stories, good direction, etc). It's an example of the Skins-genre done right.
Plus, it's in Australia and that's just cool.
Hehe, I wouldn't have heard about Slide if it wasn't for minimcgayness! And I checked it out cos I like her taste too ;) It was worth it. And I hope you enjoy it if you try it out, and my advice would be not to set your expectations too high and not to go in wanting to compare it to our beloved Skins. It's not for everyone but I'd say there's no harm in giving the pilot a go. :)
