Thoughts about that rumor that the writers will write Polin completely out of the show and give LW to someone else ?
truth be told, I haven't heard that rumor. Idk who started it, idk who's spreading it, and idk what all is going on about it lol largely, I tend to keep in my little corner and i'm very out of the loop, that said, here's my 2 shillings
As far as LW being given to someone else, that was actually my wish list ideal for how Penelope would handle it. Albeit in S3. It makes no sense now, but it wouldn't be the first time they write poor decisions about LW into the plot. In one of my fics, she evades the Queen's Chase (who is cornering her and is considerably more scary with way higher consequences than in the show, where said consequences were largely defanged) because Colin writes an article in her style to publish whilst she's locked away in the Queen's tower. After doing so, and her being released, she realizes that in order to be fully free the way she wants, it would be to give up LW.
However, it is her legacy, and she doesn't want to just kill it. Instead, she chooses to hand LW off to another woman, one who may need the power and ability to speak her mind through the page the way Penelope once did, though now she can do so in the light instead of behind a psuedonym. Being loved and speaking her mind the way she always wanted but was scared to do before had changed her, and she wants to live free with Colin, travel, write her novel, marry, and be happy, all whilst giving another woman the opportunity she had in hopes it will elevate her life. A dread captain roberts sort of situation. It continues to live outside of her, thus continuing the plot in Mayfair, but also frees her from having to be tied to it and Mayfair, and she can live her life as she pleases, untethered to gossip and the Ton. Her legacy.
If that's the way it ends up going, I'm gonna need some monetary compensation for stealing my idea! (I joke, I joke) More seriously, choosing to do this in S4 is kind of terrible tbh. In S3, it would have made sense. She'd outgrow LW and live as she pleases, revealing herself to whoever and then peacing out on a very long and happy honeymoon with Colin. Instead, S3 sold us a crock of crap about how LW is her life's work and a feminist pursuit and the only thing she will really fight for. Now, in S4, all of that is reversed because. . .people are unhappy with what she writes?
So, Penelope couldn't quit for love. She couldn't quit for Eloise. She couldn't quit for Colin. She couldn't quit for her own growth. But she will because the show no longer has need of her.
What would even be the point? Whistledown isn't needed or even existed in the books for the future seasons. If she's going to drop it, have her retire and call it that. But to have her quit and someone else do it just because she's unhappy that she's no longer anonymous is a bad character move. I found it unfortunate they made it so Pen couldn't quit in S3, claiming it's her life's work and Colin just couldn't understand because he wasn't a woman, and now in S4 she's doing it. That in of itself proves to me they had to retcon her staying as LW for S4 to serve Benophie's plot and they did it at the expense of Polin's romance and love story. They moved Polin to S3 for the numbers - they secured the future seasons, but they didn't put a lot of care into how they would write them. Polin was largely used by production, and I think that's very transparent. But the fact they could have had her do this in S3 and chose not to just makes me especially upset. They'd drag out the LW plotline and for what purpose?
Ultimately, I think writing Polin out completely would be stupid, and I would bet my hat that production knows that. They're milking them for all they're worth in the promos for the engagement and attention. Polin is deeply popular and a huge moneymaker. But at the same time, the show is bloated. There's too many characters, too many sideplots, and too many people on payroll. They have to cull eventually. Colin has already largely been written out, and that started even back in season 3. Benedict and Sophie will likely not be involved for long. I'd be surprised if they even got much in the next season, considering their circumstances.
Bridgerton is entering phase 2 as of season 5- near all the stories take place outside of the ton. That means Queen Charlotte, Danbury (for now, she has connection in Hyacinth's season) Violet, Anthony, Benedict, Penelope, Colin, the entirety of the Featheringtons, Kate, Cressida, Will, Alice, and most of the London cast has a huge likelihood of being dropped altogether. Logistically speaking, keeping so many people on retainer when they will have very little to do doesn't make a lot of financial sense. Unlike fiction and novels, they're represented by real people who need to be paid if they're showing up, and a company is nothing if not greedy.
If Whistledown has no real need to continue on for the following seasons since they don't take place in Mayfair, keeping Nicola Coughlan on payroll, a very popular and beloved actress who has the power to negotiate a high rate for her appearances, or Julie Andrews, also very popular and beloved, likely won't happen. Same situation with Jonathan Bailey. The expenses for them to be in the show are high, as they should be, and they have to weigh that against how much fans love them and how big of a draw they have for the audiences. If they cut Penelope, chances of Colin sticking around is low to none, too.
Losing Saphne showed Bridgerton they could still thrive without popular pairings, and I think they'll depend on that. I don't want to say goodbye to Colin and Penelope, and they'll likely have brief cameos in future seasons (Eloise has a strong connection to both of them, and in the books, she sends letters to Colin to narrarate the frame story), Fran and Michaela less so of a connection, but Colin is the one who encouraged Michaela to go for Fran (though this will likely be changed in the show), Greg is the one who has a strong plotline with Colin, and he'd be season 7 at that point, but with Bridgerton's track record, I wouldnt be surprised.
I think we should all be prepared for the idea that we will get considerably less Polin moving forward, if any at all. Same with Kanthony. Same with Benophie. I think they're ALL going to be written out of the show at some point. It's sad, but it also feels almost inevitable.
